Razer Blackwidow Ultimate Backlight Hum

Thread Starter
Hi Guys,

I was wondering if this was normal.

My Keyboard makes a very faint humming noise when the backlighting is not on full or off. You can hear it when you put your ear close to the controller (where the num lock caps lock status are)

Does this mean that my keyboard will break or isn't performing correctly? I guess it could just be from undervolting, like with lightbulbs.

My keyboard seems to work fine, but just little things bug me.

Mine didn't do that.

The hum is probably just an inductor for the 5v transformer. It probably is fine but it is annoyingly audible, RMA it.
Once again...

My keyboard is exhibiting the same behaviour. It's barely audible but distinctly noticeable when I have it on the lowest or second-lowest brightness. You are not alone!

mine does it too
the resistor in action?

You are not the first that mention this problem, likely the BW has some switching power supply to power the leds, and a lose inductor is making that noise. It happens frequently on switching powered power supplies, usually it's just annoying, usually it will be fixed in warranty.

My Xarmor, Qpad and BL82 are powered with a traditional regulator and doesn't emits any noise

Usually there are a couple of possible reasons.

#1 an inductor/transformer is mechanically loose, so resolder it tightly and or cover it with epoxy/silicone will kill the noise

#2 the circuitry doesn't work exactly as wanted, the wave that drive the inductor/transformer is not shaped as expected due to tolerances in the components or partly dried electrolytic capacitors or even because the circuit is badly projected. In that case the replaced capacitors are usually helpful.
And the fix from #1 is still working.
