OK so i talked to Microsoft and they will give me a key when i make my switch to my new board that is not from gateway. the guy also said i will have to have it installed and stuff to make the necessary changes. also the os install disc is on my hdd.
so i was wondering if there is anyway to my a copy of my windows apps and stuff as i don't want to lose my data if i have to do a fresh install or it ****s up!
is there i way to do this or no? if there is make sure its free
THANKS

If the board is different you will have to re-install the apps.
IF it is the same just swap out the boards and boot up>F8 to recovery console (or burn a bootable Win7 Install disc and boot from it)>Select language etc> Repair install>Start up repair.

If its a different board the above probably wont work and back up software is the same,it won't be able to install to a new board from a back up.

You can keep your files(pictures, installation files etc) on a separate partition though, away from the OS so a reinstall won't effect them. Then you can simply move them back to your C: drive once the install is complete or just leave them there.

Start>Computer Management>Disk Managment
Skrink C:\\ ( enough space for your files)>Format the new unallocated space using the default settings and give it a Letter of your choosing.
Then Reinstall Win7 - Boot with Win7 CD>Load files,pick language etc>Install Now>Custom Install>Delete C: and the 100mb system partition>Format the unallocated space>Install to it.

Then boot into your fresh install and run all your install files directly from your back up partition(it will automatically install to C:\\) and job done.
