hello again, well this weekend i took out one of my dvd drives and kept the one that works, but now when i run Gxine and try to play a dvd i get the error msg
"the xine engine failed to start.
No input plugin was found.
Maybe the file doesn't exist or cannot be accessed, or
there is an error in the URL.
read error from:
/dev/dvd"

but i was able to play dvd's before i took out the other drive, pls help

Are you sure you took out the broken drive and left the good drive in?

I was thinking that maybe linux didn't create /dev/dvd and used /dev/dvd1 instead, due to you previously having two different drives. If there isn't /dev/dvd* anywhere then it's not seeing the drive. If it's not showing up in bios then you might have a problem, otherwise it should automatically show up.

[edit] Automount might be off.

If the DVD drive was recognized at all, it would show up in dmesg (try grepping for sr0 and DVD) and symlinks will automatically be created:

Code:
lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root      3 May 11 02:45 /dev/cdrom -> sr0
lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root      3 May 11 02:45 /dev/dvd -> sr0
lrwxrwxrwx. 1 root root      3 May 11 02:45 /dev/dvdrw -> sr0
brw-rw----+ 1 root cdrom 11, 0 May 11 02:45 /dev/sr0

First I'd use the regular xine-ui, software center and search xine-ui! It should show up in your media applications and then I would try configuring it. I'm betting the /dev/dvd is set improperly.

dmesg is the file that holds all your logging from the last boot, you can display it with simply typing dmesg

grep will cut lines that contain a pattern out of a file... so you can type dmesg then a | to put that output as input to grep, and then specify the pattern to search for like

dmesg | grep sr0

anyway, make ENTIRELY SURE that its not hardware first, it will make your life much easier if you rule that out entirely first if its PATA check jumpers, check bios settings, check all your cables, make sure the PATA/SATA controller is working fine and you dont have a dead port or something...

checking if its in the /dev folder can be done similarly with this command

ls -l /dev/* | grep sr0

ls lists files, and the -l switch does a long listing to show the symlinked files to sr0

(i believe in understanding what commands you put into your console, not just copy and paste... so read what i said dont just copy and paste or next time ill do something more entertaining for me and make you cry)

anyway, if you do those 3 things, check dmsg, check /dev, and check your hardware... it will really help narrow down the problem

EDIT: forgot /dev/* in the one command oops
Kinda meh now...

ok, after reading EntTheGod's post (several times) everything checks out but i think that mushroomboy was on to something. i got
/dev/cdrom1
/dev/cdrw1
/dev/dvd1
/dev/dvdrw1
how would i be able to fix this?

btw
Code:
comp:~$ dmesg|grep dvd
[    3.144420] sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 62x/62x writer dvd-ram cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray
comp:~$ dmesg|grep sr1
comp:~$ dmesg|grep sr0
[    3.144420] sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 62x/62x writer dvd-ram cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray
[    3.144540] sr 0:0:0:0: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0

a simple fix would be:

cd /dev
sudo ln -s dvd1 dvd

Done!

A longer fix would involve finding out why dvd1 is being made and not dvd. Or to configure the system to automatically populate the node for dvd

[edit] If you don't want to link dvd1 to dvd you can always configure xine so that the areas that say /dev/dvd always say /dev/dvd1
