Samsung F1 1TB access time 23ms - Page 2

Did you purchase it second hand?
Indeed those values do seem just fine, except for 5 CRC errors, which is nothing to worry about and probably unrelated to the performance problems. My HD is also running in IDE mode with 13ms access time.

No I didn't. I think. I got it from pc-store because my 750GB Seagate 7200.12 got crashed. I didn't check the using hours but I'm sure that it was new. How could 2nd hand disk make performance worse? This is my 3rd install of windows, got messed up in the partioning two times and third time got all right.

I'm now running just in case samsung es tools full check for the disk. Using my thinkpad to write this. And one question. If I take out the SATA cable from my HDD when PC is fully out of power, can it cause CRC errors? I've taken the cable off many times when clearing cables for case's beauty or what is the word Is it bad?

EDIT. I looked up the internets and found that my F1 is the 18 batch which is slower than normal batch.. And makes more click sounds when booting. Still all okay.

Check this thread: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=237742

"DO NOT BUY Samsung Spinpoint F1 1TB HD103UJ with firmware 1AA01118 (build date second half of 2009)
They are not 7200RPM drives, but relabeled 5400RPM drives.

"Original" Samsung Spinpoints F1 1TB HD103UJ reviewed arround the web (with firmware versions: 1AA01110, 1AA01113 and 1AA01117) are OK (read fast)

Spinpoints F1 1TB HD103UJ with 1AA01118 firmware are around 20-30% slower than original "good" Spinpoints.

I've leearned my lesson, and I will never buy another Samsung storage product (or for that matter another Samsung product at all...) "

Could I update the firmware to better one? Is it possible?

Thanks!!

I have OS installed on that drive with three partions (C: for windows, D: for programs, E: for files), is that the slowing thing here?

If the drives with that certain firmware are indeed slower than other F1s, and yours is one of those, it sounds logical that that would be the main cause of the slow performance.

I checked mine with HD Tune and found out that the firmware is 1AA01113, which is listed as one of the good ones in that thread. It's an OS drive and even pretty badly fragmented but still gets much lower access times than yours.

Or maybe there is some program in the background using the HDD while it is being tested? Has the test always produced 23 ms access times, or only lately?

Yes, every time I've tested it with HDTune the access time is 22-23ms. I have closed all apps on back, leaving only my logitech speakers software and my sound cards software tray icons on. I could try to disable them and re-run.
