O.C. Advice

Thread Starter
I've been gaming for a long time but I finally found the time and money to build a custom rig, based on what people see here what would you estimate as a theoretical cap for my O.C.? Also the big limiter is my N.B. if I push it too hard it simply won't boot, does anyone have any tips especially if you have a similar rig?

Hi I have the same Mobo and cpu as yours and I have my cpu overclocked to 3.8Ghz standard and using ASUS Turbo V I can pump it to just over 4Ghz. If you have sufficient cooling it will run fine, I have never had any problem with my board it keeps at room temp 24/7 even under stress test the higest I have ever seen my board is 27 c. Infact the only time it kept crashing was when I pushed the RAM to far.

For overclocking I activated my onboard switches turbo key and core unlocker, I used the presets you can find in the BIOS under A.I Tweaker CPU Level Up and on the stock cooler I got it stable at 3.6 GHz and the temperature never went over 54 c I turned AMD COOL 'N' Quiet off. I do have a very cool case though with very good air flow. Bearing in mind I had never over clocked a CPU before I found that with this board and the programs of cpu level up core unlocker and turbo V make it simple.

Hope this helps all the best Chris

I decided to bypass and over clock in the bios and ditch all the turbo key nonsense, the mobo isn't actually getting warm to crash it, it simply error's out. Maybe my NB voltage is too low but from what I've read I'm on the higher end of what is considered safe. The HAF 932 has amazing airflow as well I would have to push it pretty hard to overheat anything significantly. Thanks for the input.

You could always remove the heatsinks on the mobo and replace the TIM....make sure that you have good contact between the chip and the heatsink base. I do that with all of my new motherboard purchases now, just to be safe.

There won't be any need for that
The "Northbridge" on AMD platforms is on the CPU. The motherboard northbridge/chipset just houses PCI lanes and an integrated graphics processor - which in your case, is not being used. This means your NB is putting out what... 5W of heat? Making that northbridge heatsink totally useless. On LGA775 when the memory controller was on the NB and CPU was FSB, it may have been nice to have, but nowadays it'd be a waste of time and money. You should return it while you can.
