Question about this raid card

Thread Starter
I am trying to build a server with as much storage capacity as possible, performance isnt so much an issue (as long as its not horrible) as getting 10-16 drives on the card.

Would this controller card LSI Logic LSI00168
Work with this cable

So I could have 4 x 4 = 16 hard drives ? If it does how would performance suffer ?

Under info it says Drive SupportUp to 122 x Physical. If this doesnt work how do you get 122 drives on the card ? I am just reading it wrong ?

That cable won't work with that card - it has regular SATA ports on it, and the cable you posted has a multilane connector on one end - it is used with multilane connectors as found on many cards (especially SAS cards).

What are you looking to do that needs 10-16 drives per card? Do you really need that many? For most users, something like unRAID makes much more sense than large hardware RAID arrays using RAID5 or 6, because multiple drive failures don't mean all data is lost, and no expensive controllers are used. You can use the 6-8 ports on your mobo plus a much cheaper HBA (ie non-RAID controller).

If you really do need more than 8 drives in an array, then a SAS card plus an HP Expander is the way to go. A mid range 8-port card ($400 or so) plus the expander ($300) gets you up to 32 ports, for similar money as you would pay for a single 12-port card but with much more flexibility.

Ok, I think I will just lower my requirement to 8 drives and it will be much cheaper and easier.

Thinking about using an IBM M1015 now then a HP SAS expander for future upgrades. Would that work ?

That would be fine, but for the price... get a 5805. I can't believe they are that cheap on ebay right now.
