Possible Hard Drive Failure

Thread Starter
Ok, need some help here guys, trying to fix a relatives compute. When booting up it goes into a BSOD as it tries to go into windows. Took the hdd out and stuck it in my main, and for some reason it looks like a clean install of windows on it, but they were looking to make sure they got files off of it. So I run a surface scan of the Disk (Pandora Recovery) and the program fails and shuts down halfway through, so I think it's a fluke and try again, it happens two more times at the exact same location.

Is there a way that I can check and see if it's hard drive failure without overwriting the lost data?

Download the proper tools from the manufacture ( western digital, seagate ) and run the diagnostics.
If that fails then you may have a defective hdd. Recover whatever you can for the relatives and rma if still under warantee.

Turns out that Pandora hasn't been working for me at all, tried on my main drive and got the same error, does anyone know a good software for doing a surface scan of a drive?

TBH I would have ran chkdsk /f on it, first.
Boot loops or crashing on load of Windows are commonly fixed by this.

Ran a chkdsk, but the problem is somehow all of the data got wiped, before I had control of it, and I need to recover it from there now.

Try a different recovery tool. There's a wide variety of them to choose from. Lots of people recommend Recuva, though I've never used it.
