A warning to unlocking the 6950 2GB. - Page 5

Do you have a link where I can flash back? The Guy on that site didn't have the how to on flashing back. Will the performance still be better if only the shaders are unlocked? And thanx a bunch

1.Turn PC off
2.Switch the BIOs switch back
3.Restart PC
4.Then flip it back to the position that you can flash it at(don't turn your PC off yet)
5.Download a 6950 bios
6.Use radeon editor and just use the unlock
7.Flash it
8.Restart PC

BOOM.

Umm, it does, and all the RAMs for 6950s are certain 5770s RAM.

Post up some evidence of the timings if you will. I've been watching this thread since you started it and the lack of evidence is amazing.

Nowhere that you have linked has stated the ram on reference model 6950's is the same as 5770's even the labeling on the Ram modules is different. I highly doubt it is the exact same, though I don't discount the possibility.

I need a source showing the ddr5 timings are different from 6950 to 6970, different memory chips doesn't imply different timing.
The ram frequency of the 6970 is 10% higher than the 6950 and the bandwidth is exactly 10% higher, so unless I completely misunderstand all this please prove the timings are three times tighter. If what you say is the case I may re-flash mine or just edit the BIOS when I get home, but you posting a scare thread like this without evidence is just stupid.

Not a scare thread, the only "difference" is the note in how it says 2 and changes one letter. Go look at the bios yourself if you want. I am telling people to unlock, just not kill the card. Full unlocks kill many cards.

So very wrong. There are three character differences between the 5770 modules and the 6950 ones. Coincidentally there are only three different character differences between the 6950 and the 6970. Something to think about?

This thread went from being interesting to being worthless. You have no proof. Any person can spout ideas from thin air, but without evidence it means nothing. You made a commitment to show screen shot evidence earlier in the thread with the timing differences and now your backing out?

Everyone can only draw one conclusion: you have no proof. So this is just a scare thread. Everyone knows when you unlock an extra core on an AMD CPU you take a risk, same for the GTX 465 to 470's and a dozen other examples. People do it anyways because it's free performance. Nothing you have shown here is any indication that people shouldn't unlock unless they have that PowerCooler model.

I repeat my earlier comment: if this is true, I will happily flash my cards back to 6950's and just unlock the shaders. The truth is though, that by flashing them to 6970's and bumping the PowerTune to +20% the 6950's perform IDENTICAL to a 6970. Free $100 performance boost anyone? And if it bricks? RMA it if you can or cut your losses and buy another one.

Have you used all 2GB? From what I've seen mine do faster. The RAM is tighter, I am on a phone right now on brake/downtime, I can't post much. Free 100$, but the chance of killing it like so many have found out. This isn't a scare thread, I am supporting unlocking, just not a full flash, it's killed many cards and the timings are different, it's not a little known thing.

You've had 9 hours since you made that commitment. Long phone call? I can cite the same TechPowerUp article you referenced showing the speed of a 6950 when fully unlocked and the PowerTune bumped +20%. At which point the 6950 is a 6970 according to their test results. Obviously I've not used all 2GB (that was a stupid insinuation), but what does that matter? You've obviously not either. The ram modules do not appear to be the same and I've already offered an alternative explanation to the ram differences between the 6950's and 6970's.

All I am asking for is proof. Otherwise this is a worthless scare thread and nothing more.
