Why the pilgrimmage to remind users that the process can shorten the lifespan of the hardware?

I'm all for people giving others a reality check, but sometimes it's just not worth it.

-5% of cards have 'failed' <---which is subjective and circumstancial
-for the ones that are 'slowly dying' it will be a year, two, three? you'll replace it by then
-if you risk potential damage, you're probably not really worried if you should have to go and buy another card(s), so in effect it's a moot point.
-the general performance gain is negligible

I've run all combinations of 6950 bios(es) in tests both synthetic and real world against 6970s and just like reviews show, especially in Crossfire, these cards have nothing substantial between them in real world scenarios. If you're looking to really nail 3dMark, or Heaven Engine then fine, do it, but I can promise you if there's a game that's just too demanding when you put on (example..) super sampling Anti-aliasing, flashing to a 6970 is not going to recover the 20 fps that you lost with SS AA. It's just not going to happen. So turn down the SS AA and run your normal 6950 at 840/1325.

Sometimes I think this crusade to stop users from flashing to 6970 bios, is actually AMD sales representatives trying to discourage people from a free clock upgrade, and influence them to buy a 6970 instead.

This.

I've followed this from the beginning. From what I've seen there's more failures due to peoples lack of understanding then actual failures due to bios'. Many souls voted that their cards got KILLED when they in fact still worked. They didn't know it was a driver issue, games issue, or an issue with Punkbuster and Afterburner, lol. This is in regards to the few tpu poll threads.

I have a 6950 and a 6970 in my system and they run identically. Same fps, same temps, same fan speeds.

My cards (Sapphire HD6050 flashed to 6970 and a real Sapphire HD6970) both run at the same temps when I use them as a single. Neither one of them idles at 20-30c. Even when I'm in crossfire and idling on a Windows 7 desktop, in which case the secondary card truly idles (as in zero % GPU load) and no matter which card it is, it will get 42-47c idle depending on ambient. The top card is always hotter and will run around 54c at about 10% GPU usage with a fan speed of 46% . When I flashed the 6950 to a 6970 I found the 6950 started running at hotter temps (nach) but the 6970 was already running at those same temps. Anyone flashing a HD6950 should make use of software to change the temperature/fan speed ramp. However, I would recommend the same thing to a HD6970 owner since they also run hot. When I run crossfire, the card on the bottom generally runs 8-10c cooler than the card on the top, no matter which card it is. You will find once you use software such as Afterburner to make both cards use the same ramp, they will respond very similarly (at least the two Sapphire cards I have do) even though the 6950 is using the 6970 bios.

I highly doubt, personally, that the slight difference in timings between the 6950 and the 6970 are going to kill the card. I would be more concerned if I were overclocking and increasing voltages. I've read a few of the "the 6950 flash bricked my card" forums, and it seems to me that many of these people unlocked cards with bad shaders, or just didn't do it properly, or had defective cards, or just overclocked them to death and blame it on the flash. In all the tests I've put my two cards through, the only way I can tell the difference between them is to look at the model numbers. Performance, fps, heat, fan speed per temperature are all identical.

I, also, have not seen anything in this thread or any other thread that I would consider proof. Lots of speculation about how "tight" the timings are, but no datasheets for the ICs (no, I'm not going to take my cards apart to see the memory chip model numbers), no explanation of how slightly different timings will damage the memory (lots of overclockers alter the timings of their memory). I submit that over clocking and over Volting do more damage to the memory than the small differences in timing. Although I have no proof of this, it seems there is just as much proof to support it as there is to support the other theory.

It looks to me that the failure rate on this 6950 to 6970 flash is no higher than any other videocard or motherboard tampering.

Here are my GPU idle temps right now, with my HD6950 as GPU1 and HD6970 as GPU2.

It's not. The Anthraxinsoup kid was just making stuff up. Judging from his picture in his for sale thread, he's not a doctor either. This was just some kids attempt to grab some rep by posting a scare thread.

Everyone has always known you take a risk when you mod any hardware, I don't see why he suddenly thought he needed to remind everyone. If he had been in custody of some evidence, sure, but he never was. He simply copy pasted this from sources he had been reading.

I concur. Claiming different memory was the same, omg!

This thread and the xfx reference thread are both FAIL.

Agreed. He should just remove this fail thread from his signature so people will quit clicking on it.

I posted this in the 6950 to 6970 unlock thread a while back. I didn't bother with this lame thread, cuz it's just a scare tactic but it seems more pertinent now.

Atitool artifacts on working stock cards nevermind modded cards. The guy who first posted the fried card from flashing who posted those BC2 vids on youtube... he later changed his opinion, admitting he realized it was a driver/game issue.

The side that proclaims the timing issue is asking what we know of timing issues to take a leap, a crazy leap of faith. I know when I tweak the ram on my MB, tweak silly, it doesn't fry jack. But omg on a vid card the thing is dead, killed caput! Something doesn't add up my friend. All the cards should fry if that was the case. I'd go with your idea of X % of typical failures due to manufacturing has more merit than the leap of faith of ram timings.

How is it a scare tactic? What would I achieve by "scaring people"? I am just warning that alot of users have had their cards die(Overclock3D had their cards die, Tim did a whole thing on it).Why are you mad that I am warning people? Also, why would they just make a card the exact same, and laser cut it? The RAM is different as you can see, and the GPU is probably one that wasn't up to specs. Go see how many people have horrible clocks on 6950s.
