Will my E8400 bottleneck a 6870?

Thread Starter
I assume it will to some extent, but how badly?

My 8800GT died on me and I bought an MSI 6870 Hawk earlier. How bottlenecked will it be concerning my E8400 has not changed?

If you overclock it to 3.6GHz + you will not be very bottlenecked in most games. But there are a few games liking more than two cores...

Newer games you mean.

Definitely with modern games like CoD:BO or BFBC2, dual cores are starting to stutter, and with how the game market is going (TES: Skyrim, BF3), it definitely looks like quad cores are going to be mainstream.

That said, it depends also on what the OP plays. There's still a fair number of people on here who play CS or UT3, in which case the e8400 would not bottleneck whatsoever.

Most games will be fine, I took my Phenom back to a dual care because I was not really noticing any difference as a quad except for GTA4 and BFBC 2
