Looking for a lightweight OS for an HTPC.

Thread Starter
Got some old parts lying around that I'm going to slap together for an HTCP. Going to throw an SSD in there for a zippier ride, what's the best lightweight OS for music and HD movies? Thanks.

you can try ultimate edition linux. it wont support netflix or anything that uses silverlight but it has great dvd blueray and multimedia support once you get it configured right. if you want lightweight windows you can use windows xp media center edition or windows 7 basic and just install media center.

There is no official BR support in Linux, it's all workarounds. Silverlight has rumors of being plausible with wine, I haven't seen any articles giving specifics just rumors.

[edit] lol I forgot to say which OS. Debian/Arch, *buntu sucks IMO

The thing about Linux/Unix is that it's free. Windows is not.

Also, will their be TRIM support for the SSD?

AFAIK there isn't a technology related to storage that linux doesn't support.

Yes, but it is not enabled by default. See this thread.

Thanks, error. +rep (if I could)

What about playing HD sound and 1080P playback? Any drawbacks? Any extra tinkering?

HD works fine, I'd say use xbmc or mplayer. A lot of people recommend VLC for linux, for whatever reason, not knowing that mplayer should have more options to tweak things.

whats your experience level with linux?

i suggest not using ubuntu or an ubuntu demon spawn distro cause i want them to die in a fire...

debian is great, i use #! which is just debian with openbox and a different default program set up, but if you really are fairly new to linux i suggest mint because its not too bad and wont be hard

arch is a great one a lot of people around here absolutely love and youll learn a lot but its not the most noob friendly
Kinda meh now...
