OH SNAP! H2O Meltdown....

Yeah... they melted....

So today I was working on some e-mails from work when my PC just shutdown...
I smelled something kinda nasty...
with my heart beating out of my chest I looked down to find the tubes around my CPU block to be a little bit white in color. A little like some of the systems that never get flushed out.
The tubes were scolding hot to the touch, and literally about to melt.
Turns out the pump stopped working (the 4pin connection got loose somehow? wth)
Anyway my pc was standing upright and i use Indigo Extreme.

My question is, should I replace tubing right away since there is some discoloration in them? Also how does a 4pin just stop working? could have been fatal.

Also, what would give off that smell? the tubing?

I would post pics, but honestly the tubes did not change shape in anyway, just color right around the CPU block....

Am i screwed?

What pump is it? If it drew too much power it could have tripped the fuse on the 4-pin plug, depending on which plug you used. You should replace the tubing because the heat would loosen it up and cause a higher chance of leaking in the future, or problems that can't be forseen right now.

I would replace the tubing. When plastic heats up to high then cools off it is not as strong, since the tubing has become weaker it could leak through the tube. I would also replace the seals on your fittings on that block. The extreme heat can cause damage to those as well.

Replace the tubing.

Sniff around to see if you can find the source of the smell. The pump motor could have shorted or burned up causing the smell and maybe tripping the psu.

The pump is working and my temps are 27C right now (CPU) and 29C GPU.
No more smell at all.
I used suuuper tight fitting tubes so Im not too worried, but ill fix them soon.

thanks guys.

I've done that on a GPU only block loop once. Similar, I happened to bump a 4 pin molex loose just a bit. Molex connectors are really not all that solid especially if they have had a lot of use.

In my case my tubes got deformed and the acetal block actually formed to the copper pins in the base. My block was usable, but slightly damaged. The tubes I had to replace because they were no longer round.

Luckily I caught mine before the tubes burst, was pretty sure it was boiling inside.

This was an old 8800GTX, no thermal limiters...could have been very bad.

Luckily now most CPUs will throttle at TJmax.

Get core temp, Make it run on startup, Set overheat protection to somethig (Mine is 80c)

you can make it shutdown/sleep if the cpu temp increases over a threshold, I knocked a molex loose, and abour 2 mins later my computer shutdown

I recently had a pump burn out, smell was terrible...

It's burning silicon...

Open up the pump and see if you can find the melted chip then post pics

I'll dig mine out later tonight when I get back and upload some pics of that. (though my pump death was caused by some mistaken wiring)
