It will always be somehow related to improving military power. But that's not a problem, as long as it stays at a Cold War level: You get better because you don't want the other to be superior enough to attack you.
Not the best situation for the entire "mankind as one nation" concept, but the sooner we get to space, the quicker we will progress as a species, and not just technologically speaking.
Let me explain.
Humans love to fight each other because of their differences. It's just unavoidable. But there is one thing that prevent us from fighting each other: facing something even more different.
I'm pretty sure racism, xenophobia etc. will cease to exist as soon as something like aliens start appearing.
Think about Mass Effect. Humans are much more united since they know they are not alone. I know, it's a game, but it makes sense.
Anyways, anything related to space exploration is a good thing. As long as we don't screw the entire solar system up like we're doing with Earth, the outcome can only be positive.
EDIT: DaClownie, I completely agree with you. But sadly without anything like a common threat (some badass aliens or let's say a 100km wide asteroid), there is no way something like a global space program will happen.Edited by MacA - 5/11/11 at 8:33pm
