[NewScientist] NASA floats Titan boat concept

Searched and didn't see a thread on this, will delete if it's a repost.

Would be interesting to see what they would find. 2023 is so far away though

Not going to happen.

People don't care about space anymore.

NASA's budget shrinks every year, and the dollar buys less and less as well.

Am I the only one who saw "Nasa" and "Titan Boat" and immediately thought of the movie 2012 where they made those huge arks?

Speak for yourself sir , I love space. Everything about it, it makes my mind go crazy trying to figure out space. One question leads to another and then another, it's awesome. Example: What is space? How did it get there? Why are we put on Earth here? Who else is out there?

I wouldn't say people don't care, it's just too expensive for what we actually get out of it. We need a planetary space program anyways, something that's not bias for war.

Ideally we need space to be a global initiative, as the current costs are extremely taxing on just one country.

Also, for all those that say that the government hates space and what not... that may be true, but I'm rather certain they hate being trillions in debt even more, and would rather not worry about another planet's moon's lakes being probed by space boats.

NASA's programs can't be 100% abandoned though, as we need the tech it creates through the R&D. Their inventions trickle down to consumer level eventually, in some way shape or form.

It will always be somehow related to improving military power. But that's not a problem, as long as it stays at a Cold War level: You get better because you don't want the other to be superior enough to attack you.
Not the best situation for the entire "mankind as one nation" concept, but the sooner we get to space, the quicker we will progress as a species, and not just technologically speaking.

Let me explain.
Humans love to fight each other because of their differences. It's just unavoidable. But there is one thing that prevent us from fighting each other: facing something even more different.
I'm pretty sure racism, xenophobia etc. will cease to exist as soon as something like aliens start appearing.

Think about Mass Effect. Humans are much more united since they know they are not alone. I know, it's a game, but it makes sense.

Anyways, anything related to space exploration is a good thing. As long as we don't screw the entire solar system up like we're doing with Earth, the outcome can only be positive.

EDIT: DaClownie, I completely agree with you. But sadly without anything like a common threat (some badass aliens or let's say a 100km wide asteroid), there is no way something like a global space program will happen.

NASA isn't the only space program on the planet. Other countries will step up.
