Voip's (Google Voice)... help?

Thread Starter
I recently heard about Google Voice and am extremely interested. It all seems too good to be true.. which is why I've come here with my questions and doubts.

With Google Voice, I give them my existing phone number, and I then get my own phone account with google.
This account offers me free calling and texting, as well as a host of other features.. also for free. Correct?

What about data? Is there any way to get data via google voice?

Also, what happens when I don't have wifi? I mean, the only places in my city that do have free wifi are starbucks, my home, and maybe the mall. Surely Google Voice (or any voip for that matter) don't rely solely upon their users having wifi readily available wherever they are?

I think I'd like to get those questions cleared up before moving on, so any help is appreciated.

Google voice is not an alternative to having a mobile carrier. If you want your phone to be able to make calls, you need a constant wifi / 3G(or less) connection.

What most users (including myself) is have two phone numbers. One is your "normal" phone number and the other is the google voice number. Using this method, google will issue you a phone number that you can forward to whatever phone you'd like. If you pay the $20 to convert your current number to google voice, you will lose your phone contract as the number isn't operable.

Ok thanks!
I guess my next question would be do all voip's require constant wifi?

You can set up VOIP over a local computer network, so not all of them need it.

If you want to use something like skype or google voice, you'll need an internet connection; whether it be via 3G, WiFi or whatever.
