The only thing I can think of is, 1) dodgy stick of ram or 2) dropping from dual channel to single channel does net decent performance drops.

Actually are you sure you are "benchmarking" efficiently?

Like, are you playing the same map and in the same area both before and after putting the stick of ram in?

Try the original RAM setup in different slots. See if this drops the FPS as well. Otherwise it's almost certainly a problem stated earlier or you may not have the same type of RAM.

also depends on the ram speeds, using 2133 with a 1066 dimm will force both to run at the slower speed

Even a speed difference that great would not cause a 20FPS drop.

I'm sorry but just "playing a bit" in a game can't really show you differences between one setup and another.

Run a consistent, controlled benchmark that will be the same both times, and see if you get that huge difference.
