Because AMD doesn't make you waste your money on crap you don't need unlike Intel. I swear, I was a happy 1090T/1100T user then all of a sudden, I bought an overkill x58 rig... I just remember blacking out at the keyboard, then waking up with my credit card up my nose and a package on my door step.

Windows 7 and video games are just as good though on the hex-cores (and quads too! Love )

Besides there are tons of similar architecture in the AMD server platforms of 8/12/24 core (I think 24) platforms.

The problem is that in order to design software that uses more cores you need to have the CPU first.
The other trick is that Intel is the one that "stimulates" some companies to make such software as AMD doesn t have the money to waste on such "actions"

By default software companies will ignore enhancements.
Not even 64 bit coding is widelly adopted between them ,what to say about other optimizations.

And the number of cores is the only way up for x86/x64 it seems.More cores means more performance , at least on paper.

Because AMD doesn't do duct-taped together cores like Intel does. If they did, why not an X12?

Developing a native octo-core Phenom II isn't cost effective @ this stage. Nothing except the server market would see any performance increases. We already see the X4s beating the X6s very slightly because even the multi-threaded games and apps usually only use 4 cores tops.

8-core will come with bulldozer, hopefully by then devs will know they have more cores to work with and allow scaling multi-threaded performance. Doubtful tho since most-all PC games now-a-days are varying quality console ports.

Because they have them.

An eight core Phenom II would need a redesign to tack on two more cores, and would have such a large die it would not be profitable.

It's a dead end architecture, and anything that requires any significant retooling for it would be a massive waste of money.

Memory controller isn't even close to being the most significant improvement in Bulldozer.

A Thuban with a new IMC would be a barely faster Thuban, and would not be worthy of release, nor would it be anywhere near as fast as Intel's latest.

Because that's exactly what the 12 core Opterons are. 2 6 core dies "glued together."

They already have 8 and 12 core processors if you really need so many cores. These Opterons run up to 2600MHZ with 12mb L3 and quad-channel memory. You don't hear about them on OCN much because they aren't for gaming. They are for work and servers.

When I get a BD, I will probably get the 4 core version, as I feel my X6 is being wasted anyway for what I do.

Yep, the whole reason socket G34 is shaped the way it is is to accommodate CPUs with two dies.

Fussing over "native" vs. multi-die n-core chips is silly. If it works it works.

Core 2 Quads were faster than the first generation Phenom X4s, despite the later being native quads. 8 and 12 core opterons with two dies have also had their niche.
