Motherboard Dead???

Thread Starter
I have been doing a case changeover and think I must have damaged my mobo. It was working fine in the old case. I have moved it all into a new case. When I press the power button the case fans and gpu fans come on but the cpu fan starts then stops. It never even tries to start up.

It seemms I have power because everything else is working. A question I have is if it was another hardware component wouldnt the computer still turn on but then error or give the error beeps. The fact that nothing happens makes me think it is dead.

Also I am installing a new hd 6990 gpu. Could that affect my older mobo in a bad way?

Any help would be much appreciated.

The 6990 shoudln't be the problem, this might be a slightly stupid question.....but did you use standoffs when you moved to the new case/ make sure nothings shorting out your board?

The case already has standoff built in.

I was using the 4pin but my motherboard could use 8 pin. It made no difference.

Did you remove everything from the motherboard when switching cases? Or did the heatsink/CPU/RAM remain attached?

Since you changed cases, did you wire up the case jumpers correctly, on the correct pins, and with the correct polarity? Putting the RESET jumper on the wrong set of pins is the fastest way to stop a board from booting....

It's pretty hard to damage a board except by static shock, unless you manage to knock off a capacitor or something....

Try checking that, and then try removing the CPU and RAM from the board, check for bent pins, then reinsert and try again.

I left the cpu/ram/heatsink on when I moved it. I am pretty certain the case jumpers are on correctely. I checked quite a few times cause I thought thats what the problem would most likely be.

A question. Even if say the cpu/gpu/ram were broken shouldn't the computer still try to turn on and then issue an error message or error beeps. When I turn on I get power to fans but nothing else. There is no beep you usually get when you turn a computer on. Its like its not even trying to start up?

Take it out of the case, and put it on a cardboard box, then try it. Eliminate the possibility of a standoff in a dumb place.

Take out ram and videocard, and then it should beep. If it beeps then the board is alive anyway.
