First time Overclocker needs your opinion!

Hi there!

Just wanted to post a screenshot of my overclocked i5 2500k with a A50 CPU cooler. It's currently running at 4.2 GHz on 1.2 voltage. My only concern is the CPU voltage and if I should set it lower/higher than I have it already. I have been running prime95 for over an hour now (no errors or BSOD) and I haven't hit 60c on any of the cores yet. The max on the Real Temp didn't record the highest temperature since I closed it by accident.

This is going to be my 24/7 Built so hopefully with this overclock I won't be putting too much stress on the CPU.

Please let me know what you guys think! :3

It looks great, congrats. The idea when you overclock is that you should use the minimum voltage that keeps the processor stable. 1.2V is quite a small amount of voltage, so if it is stable @4.2GHz you shouldn't increase it any further. You could try to lower the voltage or to further increase the multiplier for the same voltage.

Thanks for the suggestion, dragosmp! I'm going to run more stress tests to see if I could tweak the voltage a little bit. Since this is my first time doing these kind of overclocking, I might lower it to 4.0 GHz before I move on any further. I'm afraid I might screw up something and fry my CPU...

First congratz mate! Nice start in the OCN society.
Second no you won`t. The temps and voltages won`t fry anything. They just look great. Neat chip you got there.
Some torure theire chip with much higher volts and temps.
It is you first time so i understand that you don`t go ALL-IN now but sooner or later the 5GHz will be so tempting you can`t resist

Thanks, Mr. Eiht!

I figured I won't be always pushing my CPU to the limit on my day-to-day usage. Right now, I am idling around 31c and even after a full day of use the max temperature didn't even reach 50c yet.

I am going to try and lowering my vcore just a tad to see if I could reach stability even with a lower voltage. But so far, no complaints.

may i ask what your highest recorded temp was at 4.2ghz while blending in P95?

i only ask cause i have my 2500k OC'ed to 4ghz and with using an H60 after only 3 or 4 minutes im sitting at 59c as a max and as it goes on it gets to about 61c...i actually upped the OC to 4.5ghz on stock voltage and saw a high temp after 40 minutes of 69c

im just trying to figure out if my cooler is a POS or if my cpu just likes to run real hot

Hey FreakGTi,

So far, I've only ran two stress test programs on my CPU since I wasn't 100% confident with my OC setup and my lack of "knowing-what-I'm-doing".

On prime95 running for roughly an hour, the max recorded temperature that I got was 58c using RealTemp 3.6. This was done OC'd at 4.2GHz using 1.2 voltage.

On IntelBurnTest, this was when I had the Bus Speed at 103 MHz instead of 100 MHz with x42 multiplier. I ran 5 times on Maximum stress test and my highest recorded temperature on RealTemp 3.6 was 68c. That was just the peak when I was 100% load, so the temperature was running roughly 60-65c.

Keep in mind that on the two stress tests, the settings were different and I had CPU voltage set to auto in BIOS when I was doing the IntelBurnTest so I don't know if that had anything to do with the high temperature that I was getting.

But so far, nothing above 60c in regular usage on a Corsair A50. Running these stress tests always makes me feel like I'm going to break something since it's taking your CPU to its limit. But I know it's to make sure that everything OC'd is running stable and error-free.

Here's a little update for anyone who is interested. I just ran a 10 hour prime95 stress test overnight. The settings are the same as before with 4.2GHz at 1.2 cpu voltage. I decided to do this test because my game crashed when I was playing so I was worried it may have been the overclock. 10 hour may not be enough to determine complete stability, but to a certain extent, this seems to be stable for a 24/7 OC built.

Max temp didn't hit 60c, so I am very happy. I could possibly lower my cpu voltage, but I haven't got a chance to sit down and tweak it yet.

that looks good to me...i remember running at 4.0ghz and hit about those temps...but that was before messing with vcore

im on my 2nd stress test in 2 days...first ran for 6+ hours and todays test im going to see if i can at least do 10 hours at a minimum...sitting at almost 5 hours now...but my temps are hovering in the 65c range and max temps have hit 70c...but im running my blend test plus playing WOW and browsing the net...so temps are probably a little high due to the extra heat coming off the gpu

EDIT: my stress test is running 4.5ghz@1.305v btw

Great overclock with very good voltage i would be very happy with that
