Another q6600 help me get 3.6ghz

Thread Starter
Hello overclock community! This will be my first post of probally and hopefully many more to come.

First my rig with current setup:

q6600 @ 8x400 3.2ghz (1.4v) (vid=1.25)
Asus P5Q - SE2
4gb (2x2gb) pc2-6400 (800mhz) 5-5-5-18 (running on 4-4-4-12 atm) (2.0v)
Msi gtx560 ti oc twin frozr
680w be quit psu

This setup runs stable and i am very pleased with it as it is.

Still i would love to reach 9x400 (3.6ghz) and so far have tried almost everything. Went up to a max of 1.5v for the cpu and still no go.
What happens: i get in windows without issues, but as soon as i click to start prime95 i get memory dump bsod.

I tried raising ram voltage and nb voltage with no avail.
8x450 wont get to windows at all.

Furthermore i have standard overclock settings (pci frex = 100 / c1e - disabled and so on.)

Now since 3.2 runs super stable im guessing it has something to do with either voltage or ram. As said i tried all Voltage settings already so can it be that my ram is not supplying enough power? (when overclocking to 3.6 i put ram back to original 5-5-5-18 timing with 2.1v)

Any ideas /tips? again i dont really care if i cant make it to 3.6 but i just want to have tried everything before giving up.

I also noticed that many people who got it running stable have 1066 ddr2. i dont see many rigs on 3.6 with 800 ddr2.

400x9 is the standard OC for the Q6600@3.6. Most Q6600 OCs are on DDR2 800 actually.

The 45nm OCs need 1066 to be done well since the FSB gets to the upper 400s or over 500. Your X38 FSB or your RAM is failing at 450, and you really don't need the 450 since you have DDR2 800. Even if you did have 1066, the difference would be negligible.

Set 400x9 and adjust your VCore until you're stable, with memory 1:1 for DDR2 800.

These chips can hit the wall hard, i need 1.36v for 3.2ghz, 1.48v for 3.4Ghz, i didnt even bother pushing anymore.

Maybe just bad luck, you might want to play with VTT and the GTL's.

When I had a Q6600 @ 3.6 I was using 800mhz ram.

Sounds like your doing everything right.
Perhaps your power supply is the limiting factor.

it aint power supply. of that im sure.

im free in half a hour and gonna try to hit 3.4, i think i can hit that with less then 1.48 but yes, even though i have vid 1.25 it is still a volt eater. Im kinda thinking its my mobo now.

I'll keep you guys informed in the next couple of days on how the 3.4 clock went.

2thache, of all that im aware. im not new to overclocking. i dont think my memory will hit 900mhz (450). 850mhz (425x8 ala 3.4ghz) should work, its a small margin that almost all ddr2 will be able to handle.

IF i get it stable on 3.4 i will not give up getting it to 3.6, even if it pushes me to buy a new mobo or memory.

But im also considering buying a q9650 to get the max out of my 775 pc.

What i dont get is this, you all need 1.3v plus for 3.2 stable but somehow i only needed 1.25v for 3,3Ghz stable. Can anyone shed any light on this?
Ps i know that i am asking a question in your thread but it seems a lot of people with q6600 knowledge are in here.

Ok for the fourth time priming now. needed to volt it up to 1.4875 or something like that and runs stable for now (40 minutes). because of the high fsb i figured i put some extra volts in the north bridge but left it auto just to see what happens and so far so good.

I guess i can forget about 3.6ghz. 0.875v just to get the extra 200mhz is an insane amount of volts for such a little increase but if this is stable im a happy man. I also did some benchmarks with 3.2ghz (3dmark vantage and 3d mark 06, because im a gamer) and will compare this with 3.4ghz in a few hours when i got everything stable.

There will be some people mentioning the high voltage but really, as long as its 1.5v or lower im happy with that, and will keep it if the preformance is noticeable. So far highest temp im getting is 60C

im on air btw tongue.gif

EDIT!: Didnt work, 1 core failed before the hour.. pumped it up to 1.5 and nb to 1.2.. this should be it.

done, stable.

I noticed something, i have a really heavy vdroop (1.5 in bios). I did some reading and now i know more about vdroop but one thing. Can this be the cause of me not getting a stable 3.6?

(benchmark results in a hour or so)

rlavz9.jpg

edit: it seems i screwed my second screenshot frown.gif

done.

overall the difference is pretty big. My gpu is loving the extra 200mhz. This also made me aware of the bottleneck going on. I have no low fps problems so far but its clear a q9650 will bring my system to a next level and will probally give me an extra year with this pc. might just be 2. Furthermore 3.6ghz would be awsome and a great benefit but since this needs 1.5v i will give up, unless vdroop is hurting me.

overall scores for who cares:

3d mark vantage: (in this one more noticeable was the gpu score: 2200 difference)
Before: 15275
After: 16017

Before: 16872
After: 18543

I still have no idea why you're not using a 9x multiplier with Q6600/DDR2 800. You're wasting your time. And if you're experienced, you should already know (by testing with a lower CPU multiple) where your FSB and RAM fails. That way you don't wast alot of time, which is where you're going.

I benched a 3.6GHz Q8300 (480x7.5) vs a 3.6 Q6600 (400x9) and the Q6600 was a tad quicker accross the board. No need for 8x multiple.
