Another q6600 help me get 3.6ghz - Page 2

Thread Starter
i have also tried 9x400 for 3,6 and also 9x378 for 3,4. for 3,4 i get better preformance at 8x425 (1:1 with a slight overclock on ddr2).

9x400 is not reachable for me because i will have to go up to 1.55 / 1.6v for the cpu and i could but i wont.

maybe i will pick up a new mobo since the p5q se2 is budget and i think p5q deluxe will do a better job at oc'ing

Thats only because the q6600 has more cache.

OP the difference between 3.4 and 3.6 will be almost nothing. DO NOT buy a new mobo and ram just to overclock a 4 year old CPU a little bit higher. It would be a total waste. Put that money towards a new CPU/mobo/ddr3 ram setup.

Yes it does, but the point is the extra FSB didn't help it catch up.

I'm with Kirby about the mobo, because I wouldn't expect another board to help you. If your board can do well over 400 stable, than it's not your board that's failing, it's the CPU.

What are the rest of your settings in BIOS?

my settings now:

pcie freq: 100
ram: 851mhz 4-4-4-12

Dram:
static read: Disabled
Read training: Disabled

volt
cpu: 1.5
ram: 2.1
nb: 1.2

Cpu spread and pci spread: disabled

c1e - disabled
tm2 - disabled

rest is default settings, when trying 3.6 i upped nb to 1.3 and ram back to 5-5-5-18.

Edit: About saving the money for a whole new setup.. im still kinda leaning towards a q9650 wich can be bought 2nd hand for about 200 euro's. with a second hand mobo im done for about 250.
Might even keep the mobo for the q9650. When i will change my rig i want to do it good and thats not gonna happen within the year.

Ps i know that i am asking a question in your thread but it seems a lot of people with q6600 knowledge are in here.

possibly a lower VID. from what I've gathered, the lower the VID the higher the OC with lower voltages. do you remember what your VID was?

Dont bother upgrading to anything but the 1155 series or Bulldozer, you will seriously regret it. Save your money for now, the Q6600 is a good CPU even at 3.2Ghz.

q6600 @ 8x400 3.2ghz (1.4v) (vid=1.25)

He stated his VID in the OP.

Even a 1.325 chip should hit 3.6 with good air cooling and a good board. I run my 1.3125 VID chip @ 3.6 most of the time. I clock it lower for the summer (3.2). Everything stays under 65C under a lapped and washer modded TRUE.

Instead of 9 x 400

I would try something like 8 x 445 and see if you can get that stable.

Should be much faster, try getting ram to run 890 2t. try 5-4-4-13 timings.

If you only using two sticks you might be able to run 1t. Run 1t if you can.

You will need a lot of NB voltage to pull this off. Might as well volt up your old hardware. You need more motherboard voltage for high fsb, and high voltage for overclocked ram. If you try and overclock both, you need even more voltage. I know both nvidia and intel chipsets can take 1.45 fine.

No way you can run 1.3 and be stable.

Try NB 1.45

What type of motherboard chipset do you have. It your running nvidia 650 or 750, dont expect more than 3.2-3.4 stable. If you have 680 or 780, you might be able to reach 425 fsb, but 450 is unlikely to happen.

You also need FSB voltage. Try 1.35

If you have good intel motherboard, you should be able to run 3.56 easy.(445 fsb)

Basically if you running intel chipset you should be able to reach 460+ fsb with lots of tweaking.

It all about maximizing the FSB at 8 multiplier with quad cores. Only if you have nvidia motherboard should you run 9 multiplier.

Personally I found that 65nm quads draw around 1.365-1.4 volts at 3.6. Even though you set voltage to 1.5 in bios, find out how much cpuz is reporting when running prime 95. Thats your true voltage.

You certainly wont need more than 1.425, unless you have HORRIBLE chip.

No i dont, i recently upgraded to sandy bridge and sold my q6600, i was just wondering why there is such a difference between similar chips.

thnx luger, i will try some of your suggestions.

turns out when going above 435 fsb pc still boots but as soon as memory benchmark is started computer give bsod.

9x389 did work but tempatures where to much for me to be comfirtable with. Im still planning on picking up a q9650 and will also pick up some faster ddr2.
