What are good choices in AMD/ATI Graphics cards ?

Thread Starter
Hi I have recently built myself a new system that I intend to use for gaming. After many years gaming on consoles I have decided I would like to start gaming using a PC.

I Have my system up and running on a very tight budget so at the Minuit Im using my integrated ATI Radeon HD 4250 which isn't very good but still at least I have it to use for now.

The next thing Im going to be purchasing is a graphics card, which leads me to my question what are good choices in the AMD range of graphics cards?

Now I have done some research but this still hasn't helped me decide on what card to get. I have been looking at sapphire and xfx radeons 5770, xfx 5770 2gb, xfx 5870 and the ASUS 6950 2gb. I know that the gpu on the 6950 clocks higher but the memory on the 5870 clocks faster that the 6950 what difference does this make to gaming and HD video editing. I also heard you can unlock the shaders on the 6950 to make it run the same as a 6970.

I have been to the AMD website to see there recommendation and they recommend 6870, 5870 6 edition and 5970.

Sorry for the long post I appreciate all input and need help to clear this up and make a decision. I would like to run all games at the highest possible resolution like crysis and any other high demanding games, I would also like to be able to edit HD videos and render them at the shortest possible time.

Thanks Chris

6950 2 GB are the best bang for the buck. If you can get a reference design, even better. I saw a few folks selling reference cards in the Sale section of OCN. Do not even bother with the 5870s or 6870s or 5970s.

The reference design are a guaranteed unlock. But I think what the poster above suggest can also be unlocked (if you prefer to do that) and got a pretty nifty cooling.

Reference design can be distinguished by looks. It will have one of those cage fans towards the end of the card (rather than in the middle or two fans). It will have two BIOS switch. And at the bottom of the card, the PCB will have AMD logo. I will post a link for one in a few here.

EDIT: look at the pictures in this thread.

http://www.overclock.net/video/10120...-2gb-free.html

All the reference design looks the same. The only variation will be the logo/pictures on the card.

And here is the twin froz III design. If you go with this kind (non-reference kind) go with the Froz III and not Froz II. Froz II do not unlock if you wish to do it later down the line.

Thanks for the insightful info I have found the ASUS on Amazon for £198/$320 and the MSI £295/$480 ouch! Does the site Newegg ship to the uk as the twin frozII is only £183. What are the chances of ruining the card when you unlock the shaders and what do you have to do to unlock them.

Thanks again Chris

Twin Froz II does not look like it will unlock. At least I have seen a few threads where folks tried to unlock and did not work. I could not tell if they were able to flash it back or not.
Yeah, those prices are ouch! I picked mine for $260 each when they first came out. Wonder why they are so expensive in UK. I am hoping someone will post back whether newegg will ship to UK.
