Best headset for sound quility but also has a mic?

post #1 of 39
Thread Starter
OK guys as I spend almost all my time on my computer late at night when everyone else is sleeping I need a new headset. I want the best sound quality that I can but also need a mic as I talk to my mates. Budget is under $300.

Also recommend me a good sound card as I only have my onboard sound.

Thanks in advance.

I would get a standing mic like this one http://www.amazon.com/Logitech%C2%AE.../dp/B002XK1338

It works VERY well. Then you can spend the rest on a banging set of headphones, or maybe even headphones + a headphone amp to really perp out!

don't get a standing mic just get a tritton: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-203-_-Product
or a logitec g35: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...logitech%20g35
note that the logitech g35 has 7.1 virtual surround sound but the tritton has true 5.1 surround sound.

now for the sound card i would choose creative: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-034-_-Product

You do know 5.1 and 7.1 are scams, correct ? Stereo headphones will beat them any day of the week.

Ignore this guy and get a stand alone mic. The zalman mic can be clipped right onto your headphone cord and you will not know its there.

H|T Omega Striker 7.1 is my sound card, around 80 bucks and is pretty good. I don't recommend that you put too much thought into a sound card and consider 100 bucks to be your limit. As any music audiophile with a decent rig will tell you, PC audio is crap. Using a sound card only makes it stink a little less. But since most of us aren't that kind of audiophile we think that a good card = great sound, it really doesn't. A good card = slightly less crappy sound.

The fact is that if you could make a sound card that could reproduce sound accurately there would be no reason for audiophiles to buy these multi hundred to thousand dollar top of the line speaker systems.

My headset is the HPA2 and I really like it. It did start to crack with lower frequency sounds about 4-5 months after I got it, but they have to be significantly loud to crack and it goes away after a few seconds. Its a 5.1 surround sound headset and it works great. It uses smaller speakers set around your ear to reproduce surround sound, like a speaker at the back of the ear will be for rear sound. One at the side will be for center and one in front will be for the front. Just behind those speakers is a sub woofer which works great.

The headset and the sound card work together beautifully.

The only good answer I saw in this thread was the "standing mic".

HOWEVER, this obviously does not answer the question as to what headset to purchase.

Standing mics aren't always the best solution. I bought a headset for the noise cancellation, High quality 2.1 stereo sound, high quality mic (webcam mic doesn't always cut it guys.. come on now..).

Those guys are right about 5.1 and 7.1. IT. IS. A. GIMMICK.

I'm a trance music producer, and the only times you will ever need surround sound is for music that is well optimized for it, and movies that are also optimized for it. The ONLY games that are optimized for 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound are based on a speaker set up, NOT headphones.

When playing games, you'll actually have a more accurate sound advantage with 2.1 channel sound.

If you want high grade headphones, go with either Audio Technica, or Sennheiser.

I've always favored Sennheiser a tad more because they put tenfold effort into sound quality where as I purchase an equal of Audio-Technica, and the sound isn't as vibrant (but the headphones look stylish!), but stylish doesn't help with sound quality.

I would HIGHLY reccomend the Sennheiser PC-350. They are the best I've used by-far. Definitely you're money's worth, and then some.

It's also substantial to mention that Sennheiser has an excellent 2 Year standard warranty on all of their products.

DO NOT. I repeat DO NOT, buy headphones from Razer, Steelseries (their Siberia headphones are actually decent though), etc. If you want real headphones, then don't buy that rubbish. Sennheiser ONLY develops audio peripherals and products, so if you're going to buy good headphones, at least buy them from a reputable establishment, and not cheap gimmick companies with there. I have a Steelseries merc stealth, Saitek r.a.t.7, as they mostly develop mice/keyboard gaming peripherals... but when it comes to audio, go to a company that ONLY deals with audio.

What I use:
-----------------------------------
Casual Listening = HD 212 Pro

DJing = HD 25 MKII

Gaming = PC 350

Producing = HD 800

wired - Logitech G35

wireless - Logitech F540 if you plan to use it on console as well, if not G930

regardless of whether or not the 7.1 is processed, there is a difference in sound between the logitech stereo and surround headphones, albeit minor.

that being said, their ear cups are second to none for comofort and block out all other sound. not to mention, they are made from high quality materials. Used these for years playing WoW, SC2, CoD - never any hissing, popping, or mic issues.

G930 actually on sale right now

http://www.logitech.com/en-us/gaming...s/devices/7248

everyone is going to have their own opinion, many of them being valid and impartial. best thing to do is go try some out at a store for yourself.
