Best headset for sound quility but also has a mic? - Page 2

Astro A40s with Astro Mixamp... you will need a Dolby Digital Live compatibile sound card and a TOSLINK cable to achieve the very best audio... but IMO nothing comes close to the sound quality. They trump the Trittons.. and the blow any stereo headset out of the water. Some headsets will claim 5.1/7.1 playback... the A40s actually deliver it via DDL

as for "true" 7.1 i cannot vouch, but with logitech g930 when playing games with character noise in reference to your own (like WoW or CoD)... simply spinning in a circle will let you hear the sound rotate around you (via your headphones).

to an average gamer (especially in FPS), this is huge. I have yet to use a stereo set of headphones that could do the same.

5.1 and 7.1 aren't 'gimmicks'. It's more they offer really crap value for money due to either it using Dolby Headphone with a poor DAC chip in the amp it's attached to when say a Asus soundcard with Dolby Headphone is better and the headset is of poor quality. With 'true' 5.1 / 7.1, the amount of drivers [the audio mechanical part, not the software definition] needed for the headphones results in designing around poor quality drivers, resulting in very poor sound quality for the money. Also due to costs, they often skimp on build quality of the headphone frame and/or comfort due to it. Not to mention increasing with games, they often come with their own software-based surround sound programming based around stereo output.

Anyway, this craps all over the other suggestions:

beyerdynamic MMX300

$299 free ship new

http://sewelldirect.com/beyerdynamic...ia-Heatset.asp

There's a few refurb'ed ones from beyerdynamic themselves in custom colours!:

Camo version!: $271 shipped

http://cgi.ebay.com/beyerdynamic-MMX...#ht_2295wt_901

Another (IMO much better looking) Camo version: $271 shipped

http://cgi.ebay.com/beyerdynamic-MMX...#ht_2387wt_901

Honestly, just based on sound, they laugh at the other crap POS suggestions. However a stereo headphone and separate mic of choice is much better value for money. That said, for a boom mic AND they awesome camo, I'd make an exception and feel that its worth it. It's from beyerdynamic USA themselves as well, so you know it's been refurbed to top specs. There are other shipping choices if you want faster ship.

Budget for soundcard?

Also, G35, G930 and A40 are total crap. Quality of advice > quantity of advice. Would you rather buy a headphone from a company that actually specialised in headphones and audio equipment, or a 'gaming brand' and mice maker?

Standing mic, or a clip on mic.

Then get AD700s, Hd595s, or your flavour of headphones, with a amp/dac

On the other hand, I have recommended the AD700s to several people, they have a great sound stage for gaming. They sound the best plugged into my Astro Mixamp, haha

It's more the Astro A40 as a whole is rather average. The headphone it comes bundled with is junk and the Mixamp is expensive what it's purpose vs. the like of the Turtle Beach Earforce DSS, which does the same job. The A40 is junk.
