Need help: First OC attempt Q9550 / P5Q Pro

post #1 of 7
Thread Starter
So, there I was... in the multiplayer warzone of Battlefield Bad Company 2... at an average of 20 FPS... getting my ass kicked over and over again because of FPS drops during the action...

In stead of throwing my PC out of the window, I decided to check why.
I have an Asus P5Q Pro, Q9550, 4GB HyperX DDR2 1066 and 2x ATI Radeon HD4870 in CrossFire.

I suspect my CPU to be holding back my 4870's CrossFire, since according to several benchmarks and reviews my ATI's should easily do 50-70 FPS average. Well... they DON'T!

So I thought it might be a good time to start overclocking!

My BIOS is version 1501 and the CPU is still stock cooled.
Before I get my hands on some decent cooling, I would like to see if I can at least crank things up a notch. I want to know if overclocking my CPU will get me the desired (more) FPS in BFBC2! It this is the case, then I will go out and buy some big ass CPU cooler.

But thus far even the slightest change to my FSB setting instantly crashes until the BIOS resets back to default and returns "Overclock failed".

Here's what I tried; leave everything on AUTO except for AI Overclock tuner. Then set FSB from 333 (default) to 343, PCI-E to 100.
But even that instantly crashes until reset to default.
Also tried upping the CPU Voltage to 1.2V (1.12V is default) or even 1.3V, but I get the same result; instant crash!

These are the settings I can play with...
Any help will be greatly appreciated!

NOTICE: First flash latest version of BIOS 2102!!!

NOTICE 2 : Upgrade your CPU cooler before attempting these OC settings!!!

Here are 3.8 - 3.9GHz (450 to 460MHz FSB)for you to try out..

FSB freq = 450MHz
DRAM TIMINGS=by memory spec
STRAP=AUTO
DRAM freq= 900MHz (very important for the stability)
DRAM STATIC READ CONTROL = DISABLED
DRAM READ TRAINING = DISABLED
OC charger=Enabled
AI Transaction booster=AUTO
8.5 multiplier

Vcore=1.xxV (what Chip needs to hit 3.9GHz,add a bit if you crash)
CPU GTL = 0.63x
PLL=1.54
FSB voltage=1.30V
DRAM voltage=2.00V
NBv=1.30V
SBv=1.2V
PCIE/SATA voltage=1.60V
CPU & PCIE Spread spectrum=Disable
CPU & NB skew=AUTO
NB GTL=AUTO
Load Line Calibration=ENABLED

All options in CPU Configuration set @ DISABLE and CPU MULTI @ 8.5x..

Testing methodology:

1. First test these with 6x CPU multiplier with P95 LARGE FFT for at least 6h (12h is ideal) and stock Vcore as your CPU would be running @ 450x6=2.7GHz..

2. If you pass 12hrs of Prime95 Large FFT then reboot to BIOS upp your Vcore and set MULTI to 8.5x..

3. Save changes in BIOS and try to boot..

4. If it doesn't boot keep adding Vcore until it does..

5. Then in Windows test 450MHz FSB x8,5 =3.85GHz with Intel Burn Test 20runs w/ max RAM and if you crash then just upp Vcore and test it again..

6. If you pass 12hrs of P95 LARGE FFT & 20 runs of Intel Burn Test then you're ROCK SOLID..

KEEP YOUR CORE TEMPS UNDER 75C IN ANY STRESS TEST..

CHEERS..

Thanks for replying so quickly!

Hmm, yes, I will flash the update first.

On the subject of cooling; I would like to try just a slight OC to find out if it improves framerates as I suspect it should before I buy myself a huge new cooler.

E.g. from 2.8ghz to 3.0 or 3.2. Is that possible with stock cooling?
Please don't slap me for being silly if I am

Oh, I forgot: the reason is because I want to avoid buying a lot of upgrades like coolers, RAM etc if it turns out to be futile and I am better off just buying a completely new system

Right, I updated the bios, but every single setting I change resulted in immediate crashes until reset.
So I went out to buy some decent CPU cooler. I got a Scythe Ninja 3, which should be good enough to try some overclocking.
I would love advice on what I can expect with this cooler. Is a stable 3.8ghz too far fetched?
I Will order another 120mm fan for that push/pull thingy I have read so much about, but I Will need Ã* little help here on how to do that

Ehm, this is bad, right?
Happens immediately after I start the Large FFT test.

Something, likely the CPU, might need more voltage. What do your settings look like?
