6870 Crossfire - is it any good?

Thread Starter
Hello OCN.

So I currently got the opportunity to get the Hawk edition of the 6870 for only 200 dollars brand new (it's usually over 300 here). And well I know it most likely won't do much better than my current setup, so was thinking of going Crossfire.

But here is then the question. How much have they actually improved Crossfire on the 6000 series? Because I got really disappointed when I went Crossfire with my 5770s. Was kinda no increased performance, and drivers are f**king messy. 1/3 games mess up in some way with worse performance than with 1 card, or like you got to run it in windowed mode - to avoid flickering.

So I seen benchmarks of them being really good: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/301?vs=305

But 5770s weren't really doing bad either, but mess for me. So would anyone recommend it? Or should I get something like a 570 instead?

Please don't be like a fan boy but give some reliable information please

Thanks in advance

Yes, the scaling is simply amazing. Aren't the reviews clear enough for you?

I will recount my own experience. I went from SLI GTX 260s to crossfire HD 6950s. And I am quite happy. I bench marked with Heaven 2.1 and my scaling was 100%. Went from 43 FPS on one card to 102 FPS with crossfire. With Heaven 2.5 and latest, I did drop to 92 FPS - not sure what is going on. Nontheless, a hefty increase in FPS.
Games I have played so far in crossfire configuration are Mafia 2, Metro 2033, Dragon age 2, Mass effect 2, NW2, Red Alert and a few others I cannot think of.

EDIT: If you do not have a card yet, I think you should check out the 6950 2 GB. For not a whole lot more, they are better.

Standard clocked edition is almost 300 dollars here

But you're sure you don't have any problems in Mafia II? Because that's one of the games I'm currently experiencing negative scaling in.

Also if anyone tried this setup on the Total War games, especially Empire, can you please tell about your experience. Because I'm really tired of windowed mode^^

Yeah two AMD 6870's in crossfire is much better than one AMD 6970 and slightly better than one GTX 580. Does that give you an idea of how much juice? Since the original reviews came out and benchmark all these cards have improved by driver updates but the ratio is about the same still. You can find reviews on AnandTech.com, Benchmark.com, Legit.com, techPowerUP!.com to get an idea. By the way I'm a bit partial to the MSI AMD 6870 Hawks non-reference cards and Sapphire AMD 6870 reference cards should you decide to get it.

x2 HD6870's are surely a beast CrossfireX setup.

Although I'd honestly grab an HD6950 2GB and wait for the money for a 2nd one.

I have Mafia II and I have no issues with my x2 HD6970 CrossfireX.

PS: I use 11.5a Hotfix drivers with no CAP's.
PS 2: Please refrain from bumping a thread within 24 hours.
