Finding your location?

I was told by a family member that someone can track your location because your cell phone will actually embed it in the photo you take with your cell phone. I have never heard this before and was wondering can this actually be done??

Yes, it can be done.

With every photo taken, there's a metadata tag attached to the photo that includes various information, including the camera used to take the photo, lens focal length, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, time the photo was taken, etc. This metadata tag is called EXIF data.

With the advent of GPS tagging, cameras can also add GPS coordinates to the EXIF as well.

It's extremely simple to look up. You can download the photo, Right click -> Properties and go to the Details tab.

Even simpler, you can also read the EXIF by using an in-browser EXIF reader like this Chrome EXIF reader I use myself. It's an extremely common tool for photographers like myself, where all I literally have to do is hover my mouse over a photo to see any EXIF data, including the GPS tag. This one also lets me view the location on Google Maps simply by clicking the "GPS" button that comes up.

So yes, your family member is completely right.

People think it takes some techy magic to pull it out but it's really that simple.
