AM3 vs AM3+ for new build?

Thread Starter
Okay, so I am making a fresh build, with my main parts:
  1. Phenom II x2 955 BE
  2. 4gb (2x2gb) 1600 Gskill
  3. 530W PSU (RAIDMAX HYBRID)

Now, I need to decide on a motherboard. I have been debating on either AM3 or AM3+... I will be safe knowing that getting an AM3 board (the right one) will run smoothly with a Phenom II... But also, having the AM3+ would be nice to get ready for AMD's new 32nm.

Which would be the smartest decision?

(PRICE RANGE: $85-$110)

Why not wait a little longer then just make the build with an AM3+ CPU? Out of the budget?

Right now I'd get an AM3+ board, or an AM3 board that's already been guaranteed BIOS updates to run AM3+. There's no real downside other than the scarcity of AM3+ mobos compared to AM3, and obviously it'd be much better for future upgrades. Simple.

I'd hold out for another month or so until the high end AM3+ boards (Crosshair V anyone?) start rolling in, then snag one of them. Make upgrading super easy

You see, I would wait another month, but I current have NO computer in my home, due to my old one (a lappy) being broken by my cat

So I kind of need one quick, and cheap. And the current AM3+'s are relatively cheap and look as if they will give good performance.

Ahhhhh ok, then yeah, Asus just released a decent looking mATX board thats $64.99. I think that's a good option for ya. Not a lot of special features or anything, but it gets the job done

Worst case scenario... I buy an AM3+ right now, and it isn't that good.. I can always upgrade it in the future, when better ones come out.

i just asked a similar question in another thread and the resounding answer was to wait for the new boards... if you can handle a month. The crosshair 5 will have way better features than you are going to find on any current board.

There's also this one from Gigabyte, a bit more expensive but also more features. And AM3 is still a decent platform, but if you're gonna go that way I'd invest in a better board or get a totally bottom-of-the-barrel and go Bulldozer when it comes out
