AM3 vs AM3+ for new build? - Page 2

if what you are looking for is a board that can handle your current CPU and an upgraded one (in the future), why not just get the newer boards with better components? if you are going to get an outdated board now to potentially handle the Bulldozer later, it makes more sense to have a board to match. The NB, USB ports, Memory standards, etc. will all be upgraded and will last you for the next couple of years which this current board will not... not to mention the new Crosshair can take SLI or crossfire which current boards cannot.

suggestion - new board now, new cpu when they come down in price/you feel the need to upgrade

rather than - new board now, new cpu later, new board later

Only issue here is that the really nice boards aren't due out for a month or two, and we don't want anyone to go computerless.

How's this for a build to last me until Bulldozer comes out? I think this will do me well.

I would personally buy a better PSU. People neglect that the PSU is the most important part of your system. If it goes bad, it can potentially damage all your parts. Everything else looks fine. Just FYI, ASRock has a pretty awesome looking AM3+ board on newegg. It's not mATX and supports triple crossfire (and supposedly SLI according to reviews). I'm thinking about maybe buying it.

And BTW, you need to update your signature. Intel is obviously faster than AMD right now (has been for quite some time).

I would wait for a bit...
I have the best AM3+ board available at the moment (ASrock Deluxe5) and while it a great board, and is a great overclocker, its layout does leave a bit to be desired. The new 990 chipset will have more to offer (native SLI for instance) and from what I hear even more PCI-E lanes. So wait a few weeks and pull the trigger then.

quick edit: This board supports SLI through the SLI hack only.

You can wait for the 900 chipsets to be released (which will probably be June 7 at the earliest when BD is supposed to be released). From my understanding, these are the "true" AM3+ MOBOs. If you can't wait til then, and don't plan on buying a AM3+ CPU in the near future, there are a handful of AM3 MOBOs that will support AM3+ CPUs through BIOS updates. Yes, it has been confirmed that AM3+ CPUs will physically fit in AM3 sockets. I am going this route since I need to buy a new MOBO now. FYI, not all features of BD will be supported by these AM3 MOBOs. Hope this helps.

If you're on a budget of $85-$110 then I'd personally recommend gigabyte's ga-970a-ud3. I have that board in my build and it's working GREAT for my uses(moderate-heavy gaming and web surfing.)
