Alienware OC - Help! I Tried (almost) Everything!

Thread Starter
Incase anyone tells me there are threads out there that cover this, I want to preface this thread by saying I've been lurking these forums for the past week everyday trying to get my OC working. But alas I can't figure it out on my own and require some more guidance. I hope the community can help me as much as it's helped so many other members and lurkers.

I purchased an Alienware Area 51 (before you flame me for spending too much, my brother's company got me a pretty good deal and the extra money I spent is well worth the convience of having a decent pc dropped right into my lap in a few days. I do not have the time to put together a PC, source components, ensure compatability etc... so pls don't post pointless answers in regards to that)

I've got a stable (24 hours on prime95) pc right now with a small OC that I am unhappy with and want to go further. Here are current settings:

base: 170
multiplier: x21
vcore: +20mv
sdimm: auto
qpi uncore: default
hyperthread: enabled
spread spectrum: enabled
intel sidestep (somethin like that): enabled

here is my cpu-z validator: http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1815700

Here is what I have tried (in nearly every comination):

base: 180 - 210
multiplier: x21 (never changed this)
vcore: +20mv - +140mv
sdimm: auto - 1.65v
qpi uncore: default - +120mv
hyperthread: enabled / disabled
spread spectrum: enabled / disabled
intel sidestep (somethin like that): enabled /disabled

I have never adjusted RAM timings. From what I understood (could be wrong) I shouldn't need to touch this.

I am trying to get 4.2GHZ. It would greatly improve my video broadcasting, and given the liquid cooling I think my pc could safely handle it (although I could be mistaken there)

Can anyone help me out?

You would really need to boost the V-core to get it stable at those speeds. (the 3.5Ghz is pretty good for the 1.056v you have already).

Have you tried lowering the multiplyer and raising the FSB to see if it will get stable at 170+?

I've always had it at 21. Are you saying that maybe I should try a 200 x19 instead of 170 x21 ? I don't really know how the multiplier works just that most people with my cpu model use 21.

Also I read that I shouldn't go over 1.4 vcore, but mine is in mv, and doing a calculation that means that 1.4v is 1400mv? That didn't feel right to me lol

dont touch multiplier. 21 is cool.

also your board is an alienware board, it might not be able to overclock that high

also, go touch QPI, 1.34v.

and NB. i completely forgot what it is on i7s, but its there.

Isn't 'mv' 1/1000 of a volt so 140mv would be 0.140v? Meaning you would only be just under 1.1v?

Don't quote me on that but its worth reading up on.

The idea of lowering the multi is to find out if your motherboard is even capable/stable at the higher Bus speeds.

I'm not gettin the vcore in this bios in mv. When I go to +200mv, my vcore is 1.4. I read in another thread that +200mv fries mobos

I just went to +160mv and 200x21 and I got into windows but I know for certain I'm not stable right now. Do I need to think about the RAM? Some of the common BSOD I'm gettin say something about "SERVICE_EXCEPTION" and "IRQL Driver".

I'm sorry but I couldn't help but giggle when I saw i7 930, 12 Gb of memory, and CrossFired 5770's.

191x21

You're probably going to need a lot of VTT.

VTT... that is the ram voltage? Right now it is 1.5. Should I be going higher?

What makes you giggle?

Alright well I got it to 3.8ghz and has been running prime for 30 minutes now and seems to be ok. If this test works I'll just stick to 3.8ghz. My temps right now are 77c which is a little too high IMO. I guess alienware liquid cooling sucks to not be able to cool this down at 3.8ghz
