AX Plus vs. GTX 580 SLI

Thread Starter
I'm getting a little sick of my two GTX 480s running extremely hot and forcing me to crank the fan speed up to 100% such that it sounds like I'm flying an airplane.

I've decided I want to either improve the cooling or upgrade to a cooler chip. So, it comes between buying two Accelero Xtreme Pluses or upgrading to two GTX 580s.

The cost of purchasing the Accelero Xtremes comes to somewhere around $150. I also have to swap my current xtremegamer sound card with an x-fi titanium so I can make room for the huge coolers (the PCI slot is in between my two cards, the titanium is PCI-E x1 which is above my top card). Additionally, my 480s are just about 1 year old.

The cost of purchasing the GTX 580s is around $200 if I am able to get a good price on selling my two GTX 480s. This option would give me a small performance boost in addition to having a quieter and cooler cooling solution.

What do you guys think? Worth the hassle to buy and install the AXPs and have to swap sound cards, or go with a slightly more expensive GTX 580 SLI build with a small performance boost and slightly higher temps/fan noise (still significantly lower than the 480s) than the AXPs? I'm torn

Depends, do you game heavily?

If not, I'd say get the AXPs, use it, and whenever you upgrade, just maybe you can use it for that gen of cards too! I mean seriously, 2 gtx480s not fast enough?

I do game heavily. It's the main use of my rig. But, yeah, I love the performance of my GTX 480s! I just wish they weren't so damn hot

I'm just not sure if the AXPs will be compatible with the gen of cards I end up buying next, which will probably be by the end of 2011.

I would say watercooling for sure if you're going to keep them.

That said I believe you are over estimating the resale value on your 480s, you're probably going to have to pay around $400+ to step up.

For that much you could just get a complete custom water cooling setup and get 580 air performance, without the noise.

I'm not sure if I want to spend that much money on liquid cooling. I've always stayed away from liquid cooling my cards for that reason, I'd really like to try it sometime, it's just that price

I'm sure I could work some magic to get a good deal on eBay to not have to spend $400 on the step-up. I've already been scouting the market. If someone could get me a custom water cooling setup for half that $400, I'd do it in a heart beat
