4+1 phase Gigabyte MA 770 UD3

Thread Starter
Can anyone give me clarification about something. I've not had any success unlocking my 550BE cpu. Stock voltage and cpu speed is 1.34v @ 3.1ghz.

But I've managed to overclock it to 3.8ghz @ 1.5v cpu vcore. It's stable by the various benches I've done.

I read an unlocking guide which said don't unlock on boards with 4+1 power phase because of the heat that is generated by the boards’ mosfets and VRM’s. My board is 4+1. I'm not sure if this also means I shouldn't overclock with higher voltages. My cpu at 1.5v under load with prime95 large ffts after 17 hours never went over 43c cpu and about 46c core temps. With intelburntest, the same, and with linX, it was 2c higher, so I'm happy with those. TMPIN 0 in HW Monitor is to my knowledge the system temp and that never gets much over early 30c's. At idle, my system temp is 27c, cpu 34c, and core temps about 40c.

The system temp is the motherboard temp isn't it? Since the motherboard temp is low, does this mean that the mosfets and VRM’s are not getting very hot and therefore, is it safe to maintain this 1.5v cpu voltage without the risk of the board being pushed too hard and about to nuke itself at any time? Or, am I advised to reduce my voltage and overclock?

With a dual core cpu a 4+1 phase will most of the time be fine. With quad core's only 8+1 and above phase designs will do.

Where VRM quality is concerned this is definitely not the best - the chokes are small and a cheaper 3-transistor design is also used. Usually TMPIN2 is the VRM temp, motherboard temp being low does not necessarily mean the VRMs are getting hot. Since you are running a TRUE and no VRM sinks they are getting no cooling, you should at least invest in getting some proper VRM cooling on there before performing any unlock, otherwise chances of catastrophe may worsen. Since this isn't the best quality 4+1 phase I would avoid pushing too much voltage.

Thanks for the replies guys. My TMPIN 2 always reads a constant 79c. Always has done, stock or overclocked, and I believe it's a temp sensor bug with this board, as I know others with the same issue. I can't unlock this chip anyway, so that's probably a good thing on this 4+1.

But I'm asking specifically about overclocking a locked dual core, not unlocking. So since I'm not unlocking, does this VRM thing still apply to just overclocking where I'm pushing vcore to 1.5v or is it only an unlocking issue?

To nto be able to read temp sensors on those properly is not a very good thing... better to know it's overheating and back down than to not know of overheating & all

Wrong!!!! You can oc a 4 or 6 core with a 6+1 just fine. 8+1 or 8+2 is really for extreme ocing, which that means DICE or colder.
EDIT
I wish people will get this through there thick skulls.
2 - 4+1 for 1 - 3 cores.
6+1 - 6+2 for 1 - 6 cores.
8+1 or 8+2 for extreme ocing.

you will be fine with that cpu, mine is at 1.42v for 3.82ghz 86.4watts these cpus are 80w standard, even if you run 1.55 1.60v you will not hit any where near 125w which is when 8+1 8+2 phase is needed.the temp is normal for north bridge mine sits at 78c no matter what i do. this has been discussed in many threads, smile.gif

Excellent. Good to hear from someone with the exact same board and chip smile.gif
I see, so the VRM heating thing only relates to when the cpu is quad core/125w.
A few minutes ago I reverted my cpu back to 3.1@1.35v stock because I was worried about frying my vrm's until I got a definitive reply. I've got that now so I'll put my 3.8 overclock back on. Thanks!

Btw, I wasn't able to pass intelburntest at 1.42v like you, and so I put it to 1.5v where I kept it going for 17 hours of P95 large ffts and no errors. Also passed 20 runs of burntest maximum stress and 10 runs of linX. No crashes in all 3D Mark benches either, so I feel it's stable. Did you also notch up other voltages or frequencies to get stable at 1.42v, or just multi and vcore? While I'm at it, I want to try for 4ghz. From what you're saying, do I take it 1.55v is safe to try without burning out the cpu?

You can install aditional cooling on the VRM if needed
The board it s ok ,it takes 140W TDP with the default layout with no VRM cooler if it s version 2.x.
You will limit yourself before the 140W TDP is hit having in mind your chip (if it s not unlocked).
Have fun.

Hi. There's 3 revisions of my board, 1.0, 2.0 and 2.1. Mine is 2.0.
My BIOS is 'FD'. Everything works fine. Do you think it would be beneficial for me to update it?
