Help me pick a 5850 - Page 2

Well that was a VERY quick response! I'm leaning toward the Gigabyte more because of the core clock but their customer service hasn't been on my best side. Also I'm wondering if it would even fit in my case?

I wouldn't worry about the factory OC on the Gigabyte; that ASUS Direct Cu will easily surpass it.
It's one of the few non-reference PCBs with voltage regulation

You can OC it in Afterburner, or even flash it to the TOP version BIOS if you want higher default clocks and voltage beforehand.

EDIT:

As for your case, yes it will fit
(pic is a reference model, still some extra room)

Hmm now my big issue would be if I used afterburner to overclock it, would that void the warrenty? I intend to use this for quite a while and have no real experience with overclocking.

I can also confirm that the sapphire can be overvolted in Trixx. It's shorter than the reference card too, so if space is an issue, that's a plus.

However, I really don't like Trixx, and my Asus directcu 5850 overclocks to 1050 core (under water, but still, the air cooler would probably get it really close).

I will warn you though, the Asus card is a bit longer than the stock ones. Not by a lot...maybe half an inch or so. I've got a reference and the Asus in crossfire in my rig, and the asus one is just a bit longer. Probably less than an inch.

None of those you mentioned in the OP are worth it, to be honest. I'd recommend you get the

, which is cheaper and has a shorter PCB. It also supports over-volting should you desire getting higher over-clocks.

TriXX version 4.0.1 was released 9 days ago, and it now supports over-volting for the 5850 Xtreme.

I have that card myself, and although I don't know about the asus or gigabyte versions, I can say its very quiet, and the stock cooler does a good enough job (26C idle, 67C under Furmark [And its the top card in my crossfire setup]).

However be aware it only has 1 crossfire finger (if you were thinking of ever getting more than 2 of them) and there's no bridge in the box.

Lots of good help on this thread, nicely done everyone

I think you'll be happy w/any of them OP. I'd get the Xtreme if they had it in stock at $139.99 and didn't ever want tri-fire, and my next choice would be Asus.

Asus, I have one, it's nice. No voltage increase and I am running 800/1200 on the stock cooler which works very well. Once I get water on it, I am sure she will go further.

There are better cards for the your price range. hd 6870 is worth considered. They're going around $160-170 AR on the Egg.
