My psu is dead???

Thread Starter
I can't seem to tell if it is dead or not.

Things it can do:
Power on FANs
Power on the little leds on the motherboard
Power on the leds on the gpu

Things it can't do:

Mobo says GPU is the problem, but if there is no power going to it, can the psu be the cause of the GPU problem?

Really want to fix this ASAP!!!!!!

You could get a cheapo video card that doesn't require any external power to test with.

If you are convinced it's the GPU, then get a cheap reliable video card to test it.

IMO testing the system with a low end card is not very conclusive without the PCIe power cables connected. It only proves the PSU isn't dead and the card slot is probably OK. It will not determine whether the PSU is damaged and can no longer drive the 6970 nor will it prove 6970 has bit the dust.

Better would be to take the suspect XFX 6970 in another system that has an adequate PSU and use the PCIe power connections and test. Or swap an adequate, known good PSU in your system and test.

If you do not have access to a good PSU or a system capable of testing your 6970 then double check that the graphics card is installed level and firmly seated. Verify correct power connections are snapped in place and the output to monitor is tightened. It would also be useful to check all power connections to motherboard and periferrals and control cables as well. And verify the modular connections at the power supply are snapped firmly in place.

You can also use the jumper trick and check voltages troughout the system including the PCIe inputs. (See Link)

If all else fails reset CMOS.

Sounds like somebody didn't do his homework...
If the motherboard is functioning enough to give you error codes, then what do you do? < Inspec the PCIEslot
Doesn't really matter if you run out and get a basket of high end stuff and can't put it together right. Find your clear CMOS jumper (or button, as some mobos have that),unplug PSU from mobo> pop the battery out>clear cmos jumper>replace battery>replace jumper to save position>reconnect PSU>press GO!
