Unreal Gold has reminded me how amazing some old games are...

Thread Starter
I realized tonight that when I bought the Unreal Pack from steam last summer I never even looked at Unreal Gold or honestly any other games other than UT3. I just bought it cause it was a deal and that was it.

So I was bored and decided to fire up Unreal Gold just due to the ~1min download from steam.

Threw on 32x AA from the nvidia control panel and started the game.

After 5 levels I can honestly say that I forgot/never realized how amazing this game was. It has a completely different atmosphere and style compared to anything out today or even in the last decade or so. I found myself jumping when things popped out at me and genuinely getting into the game quite a bit despite the dated graphics. (although 32xAA makes everything nice and smooth) The music is amazing as well, really adds to the game like it should.

After playing it for a while I tried to think back how long its been since I was able to truly enjoy a game and not get hung up over graphics/fps/awful voice acting/unrealistic story/KD ratio/rankings/ect. It really just reminded me why I love pc gaming and video games in general.

I just bought and installed a bunch of classics from both Steam and a couple other services and will be going on a classic gaming binge over the next month or so (minus the Witcher 2).

Unreal and Unreal Tournament (and a to a lesser extent Quake II) were the staple LAN party games for the longest time as I grew up. There was nothing quite like UT with insta-gib, high speed, low gravity and no frag limit to make that toilet bowl level the main event of the night.

(exploding ammo packs was one of the best mods in UT!)

I used to love UT99 and really enjoyed some crazy mods like UT4E. I remember me and my little brother laughing insanely with railgun kills and the damn baby doll nuke or katanas. But I never went back and did the original although I did recently play Quake2 with a visual overhaul, it was quite fun too. I wonder if there is an engine overhaul built into the steam version of Unreal.
