Anyone else had their Intel CPUs die?

Thread Starter
I had a Q6600 die once. One day it worked, the next day it didn't, it all happened while it was off. No POST, unnecessarily powerful fans whooshing loudly, but no-one's home. A cheap replacement CPU worked fine.

So, has anyone else had their old or new Intel CPUs die for any reason?

EDIT: For completeness, my Q6600 lived from June 18th, 2008 to January 2010. I think it was Jan 4th or 6th.

Fun fact: The reason why my main rig is an AMD is because of the above. Mega .

my brother had his i7 920 die randomly.... and it took so much testing to verify that it was indeed the CPU since it's so rare for a processor to actually die.

My previous 2600k died back in February, along with my previous P8P67 EVo. All out of nowhere. I wasn't even Overclocking.

Got new parts through RMA.

Been through like 60 chips in the last 15 or so years. Never had a single one die on me.

I was thinking about starting this same thread with a poll to see how many people actually killed a chip OCing it, seems like there are very few stories on a board full of people pushing chips to the "limit" for so few people actually to find the limit. I think the majority of the stories are of people who just got bad chips and had to RMA them, some that slipped through the cracks of pre-testing.

Quite strange. I guess not everything makes it perfect out of the factory.

I guess you could log your temps before you shut it off, and if it dies, post 'em here.

My Q6600's issue was possibly overheating, because the comp was beeping and revving the fan before I shut it off to make it shut the heck up.
