This is also true I have the 2.1 Logitech Z-2300 set and when I try to alter the crossover on the software for my sound card it just doesn't sound right at all there's frequencies and just blahhh. But for my purposes I think the set is fine (light gaming and some music). It has a lot of bass as well IMO. For basic purposes it's a decent set but try to find a deal on it, maybe CL or something.
in movies your sound card doesn't get used to decode it. You'll have to tune ffdshow in your Codecs. Go to audio config you can set the cross over and the voice volume there gives about 3db boost depends on what distance we are talking about

oh i rarely watch movies on my comp but i'll try that out just to mess with it ^_^ thanks

With games except bc2 you'll need to tune the soundcards optimizations coz ffdshow isn't being used. Everything else tune ffdshow
