HighPoints description of the family of HBAs specifically says "hardware RAID". As for PCIe 2.0, it supports 500MB/s per lane, 16 lanes, 8GB/s. SSDs scale amazingly well but you would still need at least 17-18 Vertex 3's to fully populate x16 lanes. Obviously a bit shy of 32, but I was finding the x16 interface the more impressive part as it is the first to market. Few companies are even using x8 cards.
