My 470 GTX is under performing - Page 2

OP can you run a gpu bound test, like 3Dmark11, or Heaven? It will be easy to see if the card is performing as it should or shouldn't be in either of those tests since they use very little cpu power.

^^

This here...

What I suggest is running MSI Afterburner or a similar program and use the OSD (on screen display) it will show core, shader & mem clock speeds as well as GPU % usage.

Then run a few 3D benchies.
3DMark 06
3dMark Vantage
Heaven
3DMark 11
and monitor the GPU usage to be sure its hitting 100%.... Those should all push your card to 100% regardless of the CPU

It kinda sounds to me like your card is stuck in 2D mode for some reason.. Maybe try a few different drivers if you havent already...

PS: If your card is running at the right speeds and your seing low GPU % Use then chances are its your cpu not being able to keep up with the gpu..
Why it causes less FPS is strange to me... Never heard that..

I tried the stress tests and it does go up to 100%/99%

I have a pic of MSI and Task Manager running during gaming. It looks like it runs normal here and there and then throttles back a bit. but even when running at the normal stat lines it still has a low FPS compared to my old 4850.

Looks like the max gpu usage was 36%.

It's just a hunch of mine, but I believe Fermi wants more clock cycles from the cpu than AMD cards do. It could explain why with that cpu bottleneck of yours you get higher fps with a slower video card.

You have 3 problems here.

1) Windows XP. Yes, that's a problem. Nvidia drivers aren't that great at all on XP anymore. That could very easily be part of the problem.

2) CPU bottleneck. You're only using a single threaded game, which its clear by your CPU usage. You're pegging out with one thread (it is splitting the load nicely with all 4 cores though).

3) It also looks like you've got 4GB of physical RAM. You're only going to be able to use about 2.5GB or so of it, due to your GPU being 1.25GB, and a little extra for other allocations.

Brett has stated before that windows xp might not be good with Fermi cards due to possible driver issues.

Would it be possible for you to test out Windows 7 64 bit?

He can find the download links from MS for Windows 7 x64 still(pretty sure, I grabbed it a few weeks ago when I couldn't find my disk) and just run trial mode by not entering a key. Shouldn't be hard to find and completely legal.

OK. Sorry it took so long to get back to this post. Life was happening. So i just got back from a friend who is running a better system than I am. I ran 3Dmark-11 on it and here are the results.

Go to this like for the results.
http://3dmark.com/3dm11/1282982

I haven't use 3dmark before on a Graphics Card so can someone let me know if this is good or bad for my GTX 470 non overclocked.

Also another thing. When I overclock it to about 700-750 on MSI afterburner and i let MSI auto change my shader clock and i up my Memory Clock to about 1750. I get NO increase in FPS in games.

Help appreciated.
