Ubuntu Server 10.4 install problem

Thread Starter
Tried to install Ubuntu server to my new OS drive last night (WD 640gb Blue). After installation was complete and the system rebooted, all I get is a blinking cursor. So I monkey with it for a bit, reboot several times, play with the BIOS to make sure its booting from the HD,etc and still nothing. Blinking cursor. So I plug the jump drive back in, reformat and reinstall and same thing. Install seemed to go just fine, but nothing but a blinking cursor.

I had the same ISO installed temporarily on a 1TB F4 that I have other plans for, and it worked flawlessly. Install went fine. Ran for several days until my OS drive arrived. No problem. If I plug that drive back up, it boots and runs just like it always did. So I know its not a hardware issue unless its this new (recertified) WD Blue.

So my question is, is it possible I just botched something during the install? Or do I just have a bad HD?

Sounds like something might be wrong with your boot loader. Check out this thread on how to reinstall Grub - http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=224351

OK that link seems to be about trying to fix a dual boot system I'm not trying to create a dual boot option. I'm just trying to do a clean install on a new HD. My first install on the F4 was just to tinker around with and get more familiar with Linux. I'm removing that drive.

After install and reboot I can't do anything. I just get a blinking cursor. Can't type, can't login, can't do anything but say can't.

Sorry if I wasn't clear. I'm a noob with Linux, and this stuff still feels sitting in a church with a class 6 hangover....not comfortable.

I'm almost positive I'm following your post but try plugging in this drive with the blinking cursor by itself. I mean no other drives/jump drives/anything else.

Also you try a simple single pass with something like dban. I have to do that with drives at work sometimes. Just make sure you dban the one drive

Then do the install again. Again, nothing else plugged in besides required hdd/install media. This is what I would do anyway.

Yeah I've left all my new storage drives unplugged this whole time. Have installed it three times to no avail. Will try a pass with dban and attempt to install again though.

Thanks for the suggestion

perhaps there is an issue with the install Media, this has happened to me.

I downloaded another one and burnt again at a slower speed and with verification. Installed and booted fine.

I also had 640GB WD Blue drive and was fine

I appreciate the response.

I had ended up downloading a fresh copy and tried to reinstall from the same USB stick and still nothing. Tried that a total of 4 times, to no avail.

Downloaded the Ubuntu 10.4 Desktop version and it installed from the same USB stick and it worked perfectly. Who knows.

I was just going to install FelxRAID on the desktop version and be done, but the FlexRAID site was down yet again. Whole project seems too unstable to commit my data to it. So I've decided to just go with Unraid and call it a day
