As i understand it, an SSD that's under regular use most of the time even without TRIM will have a life expectancy of like 5 years and with TRIM it's nearly 10 years.

Under light use (like only being used to store OS) they can last for decades.

Could be wrong on this though...

Life expectancy as a disadvantage for SSD's it really over-exaggerated.

Plus add in the fact that you would probably be considering upgrading it long before it even reaches the end of it's life.

Well I'm not necessarily worried about it crapping out in 5-6 months. Really just about the noticeable rate of performance drop with/without trim in raid/non raid.
AFAIK the performance drop is negligible. It'll only become noticeable when its very near its end of life. And even then you would probably need a benchmark to show you the difference because you wouldn't actually notice it yourself.

Again, I could be a bit wrong on some points and I'm open to correction. Most of what i know comes from research i did before i got my Crucial M4.

.....that reminds me..........i should update my sig rig

I have also heard that too. I here the extremes on both sides. "You have to have trim or your performance will be crap" and "Performance drop is so little you won;t notice." But I believe you have me sold. I'm gonna keep looking into it and will probably just on board the SSD train soon.
I'm pretty sure you can run programs with Wiper and etc, and it'll bring the SSD to about 95% of the performance when it was new. Someone did a test on this...forgot where.

Now would that be for a drive without trim or a raid array? How effective are those programs and how often are they needed to be run?
Think of it this way: An HDD will most likely fail in the time for an SSD to degrade to death. Under normal usage that is. You could technically kill it with repeated DBANs in a matter of days, but that's not normal usage, now is it?

As far as im aware none of those sort of clean free space wipers are good for an ssd and if you use them you will more likely slow the ssd up. If and when an ssd slows up the only way to get it back to as good as new is by secure erasing the drive and reinstalling windows, or from an image.

There is a tool someone has knocked up that sort of manually trims the ssd, that may work with a raid array as that wont have trim, so guess its better than nothing.
