Need Advice for new GPU

Thread Starter
I just upgrade to i5 2500k, I have Radeon HD 5770 but I'm not actually happy with it. I'm having about 300 bucks now. I play heavy games a lot and may be this Christmas, im gonna have 2 monitors (1980x1080). I looked around newegg and saw the MSI R6950 Twin Frozr III PE/OC Radeon HD 6950 2GB. It has 2 fans now so i guess it cool the card well. Is it worth money? Please give me your suggestion which card is worth money in performance and cooling well. Thank you.

I've heard a lot of good things about Sapphire's Vapor X cards. Maybe you should check them out.

If you want to stick with AMD, the HD 6950 2 GB cannot be beat. The twin Froz III is an awesome card and you can unlock the shaders on it or you can unlock it to a full 6970 if you got the ballz. Got awesome cooling as well. For a little over, you can grab the HD 6970 as well.
If you want to go nVIDIA, the GTX 570 is an awesome card. But I think it maybe a bit over your budget because you definitely want to grab a non-reference better design if you want to overclock it.

As a AMD user, I will definitely recommend the 6950 as best bang for the buck. Especially considering its unlock ability.

EDIT: Please note though that not all 6950 can be unlocked. The one you are looking at (Twin Froz III) can definitely be unlocked and so also any reference design (which are getting as rare as a green moon). The 1 GB version has a low success rate of unlock and most other non-reference 6950 has a low rate as well.

i think a Grforce card would be a nice matching for your sandy bridge. You can get a GTX 570 or GTX 560 (Dont sniff that guy has a big overclocking room) and they are also available in Twin frozer II version. Or else a 6950 is the way to go with a nice bios flash.

Actually since the Twin Frozr III is non-reference in can NOT unlock. I have seen countless owners of the TF3 brick their cards because they didn't research properly (there was a thread on OCN only yesterday). So no, the TwinFrozr III does not unlock, some have been able to get the 6970 BIOS to register but the core clock etc. are all wrong and they have had some issues flashing back to the original BIOS. Especially since the TF3 does NOT have the BIOS switch like the reference boards do

OP: You are best off with a reference 6950 2GB, since almost all the reference 6950's unlock and if the BIOS flash doesn't work, the reference cards have the BIOS switch so you can just switch to the second BIOS and then reflash the first to original 6950 BIOS.

But definitely get the 6950 2GB, the little extra VRAM will come in handy if you start extending your display

Are you sure about this? I think TF II are the ones that folks had been bricking. TF III DOES have the BIOS switch and from what I hear has a successful unlock rate. Maybe someone with TF III will post here.
