$500 budget PC for room mate

Thread Starter
My room mate my freshman year in college loved my PC. I would come back from class and he'd be playing BFBC2 or something all the time.

He wants his own PC and said $500 is all hes got atm. he just loves to play some FPS games, not overclock (yet).

I figure hes not going to get a top of the line of course, but im sure a decent gamer is possible.
my idea

ati 5770 - 115$ (or 5850 xtreme)
Asus mobo - 110$
965 - 130$
Antec 300 - 60$
Ram - 40$
HDD - 35$
CD Drive- 20$
Windows 7 x64 - MSDNA

I would swap out the 965 and get a 955 to save some cash.
With the right motherboard, You could buy a PII 555 Black and unlock to quad core. That would save alot of money.

Honestly I don't think the risk/reward is worth it anymore. You only save maybe $50 max, and it's always possible that the cores are defective in some way. Even if you do get the extra cores running, they could be handicapped in some other way.

if you can wait a few weeks, see what happens to the am3 prices after bd cpu's are released

5850 would be much better than 5770
You also need a power supply.

From an Antec 300 owner, I would recommend looking for another case at that price. Go with something with better cable management and more features.

I was thinking this same thing. You can get a HAF 912 for $60 on newegg and that is a much better case imo. Even if you don't like the aesthetics, you can't deny that it is an excellent performing case for the money (probably the best bang for your buck)

I don't know if it's allowed for me to suggest this, but I'm selling some G. Skill 1333MHz Cas 8 DDR3 RAM and a GTX 460 on here. I'd be willing to do a packaged deal for like $160 (5 buck more than your current GPU and RAM cost). The GTX 460 would definitely be better than the HD 5770.
