could have been anything - a fault on a single pair, poor termination, 2-pair cable only, crossover connections - all of these problems will allow a cable to work at 10/100 speeds, but they won't manage gigabit.

Im not exactly sure what was wrong with the ethernet cable. But I upgraded all of them to CAT6 and I am getting pretty good speeds now.

WOuld you have any idea why my up and down speeds to my home server would vary SO much. one time ill transfer a blu ray rip @ 11 gigs it will transfer 70-90 MBs
and other time ill transfer things and the speed will be 12-18 MBs

is there a reason for the fluctuation?

Thanks guys

file fragmentation? other processes using the network links or (most likely) the HDDs at either end?
If you're using WHS v1, it's very likely caused by the Drive Extender Migrator Service (demigrator.exe). It has a habit of slowing down all disk activity while it's in the process of moving data around on the pool drives.

I admit that I was initially intrigued by the drive pooling and folder duplication features of WHS. The ability to enable duplication of individual folders is handy. However, there are a couple of problems with it:
  • It's a major resource hog when it's running. It cripples any file transfers that are running. It causes stuttering when streaming HD video to another computer. I don't think you can force it to a low priority either.
  • It only runs once per hour. If a pool drive fails before new data has been duplicated to another drive, that data could be lost.

I have several other issues with WHS in general, so I'm planning on replacing it with Linux on my home server. Amahi w/Greyhole seems like a good replacement for WHS, but it's overkill for my needs. Instead I'm diving deeper into Linux by switching to Debian. I'm not afraid of using the CLI (in fact I enjoy it). I haven't completely switched over yet, but it's already proving to be a much more reliable and responsive OS than WHS on my old P4 home server.

Sorry for the mini rant.

I share some of your sentiments, WHS has many positives but a ton of pit falls.

I have a copy of windows server 2008 but I was drawn to the "ease" of WHS form all the talk and advertisements.

I have NO pervious experience with servers. Being that this server is my FIRST server build and endeavor.

Would server 2008 be a better choice?

Will it also offer the simplicity of WHS?

Will I be able to access my files through the internet?

Thanks guys

Yes - but secure setup is not nearly as straightforward.

Not really - but a lot of how you set up Server 2008 is the same as on any other (desktop or server) versions of Windows. That really is the beauty of Windows - everything is quite consistent across versions, so the learning curve is less steep and you can play to your heart's content.

But a big problem comes when you're looking to expose your system to the internet - get something wrong or miss a step and you leave your whole network wide open.

Maybe installing 2008 in a VM and playing with it to see what you can do would be a better idea than using it straight off in a 'live' environment?

Oh, and remember that 2008 doesn't have the same nice DE as WHS v1, or (most) of the nice GUIs for setup etc...

I just dont know anymore.
Im receiving from the server anywhere 60-90 MB/s avg prolly 75MB/s
however today my up speed to server was 2-5 MB/s

checked it against other computers on my network they were upping 45-60 at the same time.

why would my down speed be so different from my up speed?

again this is not an every day problem but its big enough to talk about.
