Help: Building 1st Rig for HD Video Editing & Rendering

Thread Starter
I'm looking to build a prosumer workstation for mainly HD video editing and rendering in Sony Vegas Pro. Any advice on parts/specs would be greatly appreciated.

OS preference: Windows
Camera: Just a Panasonic HMC40; no other cameras
Format: Just AVCHD (expect to work with HD only)
FPS (frames per second)?: Mostly PH 1080/24p and sometimes PH 720/60p (for slow motion in post)
Editing Software: Sony Vegas Pro 9.0/Edius Neo 2 that came with the HMC40.
Nature of Work: Independent Narrative Filmmaker (shorts and feature-lengths)
Besides basic editing and color correction: Green screen compositing, CGI work (mostly objects or animals with no CGI environment) in Maya or Blender for export to captured footage, and weather effects such as fog or rain.
Output: Digital File, DVD, HD-CAM (ready to master onto it), and perhaps Blu-Ray Disc. AfterEffects is my main 2D compositing application.

It seems that I should go with Intel i7 2600k, Nvidia at least 1GB GPU card, OS SSD drive (how big?), at least 8GB RAM with at least 16GB max capacity, dual at least 1TB drives (7200rpm) for use in a RAID set up for media storage and rendering to. Anything else I'm forgetting? Please suggest parts for the new rig based on my needs. Be detailed as necessary. If you need more info to better base your suggestions on, please ask.

I don't believe Sony Vegas Pro 9.0 takes advantage of any GPU processing.

Thank you.

Do you have unlimited funds? You didn't post your budget.

You are on the right track so far with the parts you are looking at.

I would use the most ram you can, so I would tend to a intel build... rendering takes alot of ram.

That list looks great, PowerTrip. But I also need a 20" or greater monitor (with a headphone jack) and basic stuff... keyboard, mouse, speakers, etc. I also need a port bay that includes an SDHC card slot.

If you are not going to do any gaming, I guess we can cut down on GPU power, and the F3 Spinpoint is fast enough of a storage drive that you don't need to RAID it so you can start with just one.
  1. Swap out the GTX 570 for this GTX 460 SE 1GB $140
  2. Take out one of the F3 Spinpoints
  3. Add this 21.5 1080p LCD Monitor $130
  4. MS Keyboard and Mouse $28
  5. 2.1 Speaker Set $27
  6. All-in-One Card Reader $13

New Total Shipped = $1,501.86

Nope, no gaming whatsoever; it won't also be connected to the Internet except for updating. I'm fine with starting out with just one storage drive. I'd be happy to have a working system that can handle HD video editing still reasonably well and add on parts when I can in the future.

For anything else that's Internet browsing, typical consumer activities, etc. I have this PC I'm using now.

Edit:
I just read the previous post. Thank you very much, PowerTrip.

Yep, no problem man. I wish I could build it for you too, I love custom PC's and everything about it

The GTX 460 SE has mini-HDMI port and you can also get a DVI-HDMI adapter.

Here's the Final Build:
