Ok so im using my VIA onboard audio, and wanting to play MEdal of Honor Pacific assault which uses directsound not OpenAL. So i get stero audio, is there anything for VIA chipsets that will correct this problem or the only solution to install XP on my machine so i can play one of my favorite games in all its glory.

And I say damn you to microsoft this didnt bug me till i got a surround sound system but now it does, because you broke support in alot of my older games im finding out.

ok well since no one has a suggestion and i tried 3d sound back which only works appearly for realtek cards, and no im not gonna waste money on an X-fi, its a waste of money, my VIA HD sounds damn good to me, I will I guess be forced to use XP because of Microsofts stupidity, they should have provided a wrapper to convert all directsound hardware calls to OpenAL hardware calls themselves so that older games would you know work.

I imagine they where in bed with creative and thats why it never happened, yes I have an Audigy 2 but it had to be removed sever popping, static, ect.

Can you please give the codec number of your via audio. Via used many chips hard to hunt down the program without the real chip manufacturer.

Realtek --->3D SoundBack
C Media ---->Xear3D EX
Creative----->ALchemy

Its basically DTS Interactive Technology just plain old Dolby

The DTS-610 does it for you to digital from the cards analog outputs doesnt matter the OS

I'm gonna bump this because I'm in the same situation as OP. I have VIA onboard audio and want to play an older game (America's Army 2.8.5) which uses both Directsound3D (in XP) and OpenAL (still works on 7) for sound.

Right now I am dual booting XP and 7 because I have a Razer Barracuda AC-1 soundcard which only has Directsound3D support (no openal), so it is basically obsolete and only really utilized on XP. However, the game sounds great for positional audio on XP with the barracuda.

The problem is that I want to play the game on 7 and have it sound just as good. It seems the only way to do this is to use a card with OpenAL support (since DS3D is no longer in vista/7). I don't believe my onboard audio has OpenAL support. In fact I haven't been able to find any cards marked as OpenAL compatible apart from creative's. I strongly dislike creative as a company and would rather burn my money than throw it away on their products.

So, it seems we don't have many options here.
@OP: you mentioned the games you are looking to play use DS3D specifically with no OpenAL support. Creative has made a workaround for this and it's called ALchemy. ALchemy translates DS3D calls into OpenAL so you get the full sound experience on vista/7. Like spoony mentioned Realtek and C Media also have their own workarounds. I will try a generic c-media 8788 driver with the barracuda and see how xear 3d works.

Try running the game in Xp mode.

running games in XP mode that looking for D3D sound will not work. the Direct sound hal is not in windows vista/7 which why you needed to use alchemy/GX in the first place.

Anyone else have an answer to this?
EDIT: nvm, I'm just gonna buy an asus card and use GX2.5 for ds3d emulation.
