Then you are the exception to the rule.

The first computer my parents ever owned that didn't run Win 3.1 was a HP machine that ran Windows ME, and it was terrabad. For starters, the machine was pitiful in the hardware department if meory serves me right. The PC had Norton Internet security on it [my parents still subscribe to the 'Paid AV is better' mantra], and you had to wait almost an hour for the computer to be useable because it had so little RAM... I think it had like 128MB ram total...

But the OS was crashing and hanging left and right, even after my parents upgraded the RAM, reducing boot time to a minute or so. Driver updates were a hit or miss as to whether or not they'd actually work, and just overall it was a headache to use.

Eventually XP came out, and my mom bought an upgrade copy, and our problems disappeared.

i never had issues with vista... granted I never used it on a sub par pc.

i actually prefer it to 7 for business work. i am not a huge fan of the "superbar"... i prefer the old school quick launch with regular taskbar.

(there is still a way to get quick launch in 7 but its not the same to me)

I use 7 on my gaming pc and htpc,s thought.

I can name you one big reason that Vista suffers greatly, before and after the service packs.

If you decide to inadvertently shut down Vista when loading or shutting down the OS it can cause severe (unlike XP and Windows 7) issues with the file system.

op you Shouldve tried vista at its release and the months there after. From system restore to trashing your drives to it crawling to snail pace. But it got better and its now running smoothly. Still bloated but that you just throw it in the blender with vlite and remove the junk from it and it runs like a dream. You also have to remember 2gb ram was the norm back then aswell as most were using xp 32bit. So 2gb to vista it wasn't as smooth. But people seem to find 4gb is its sweetspot with it ram became cheaper.

This^

Pre SP1 Vista was horrible. After the service pack it ran just fine though. A little resource heavy, but fine.

Its just a pretty version of XP (bulked down of course) with no new features except navigation in the Start Menu. Vista isn't horrible, but it isn't XP or Win 7.

I'm sure you can find some comparisons if you google it lol
I'd say the trash gaming is due to your Acer Aspire.

Vista post SP1 was perfectly fine. The main reason it sucked at the start, was because so many systems out there were being sold with Vista preinstalled that could probably barely handle XP.

When Vista first came out, it was downright horrible. Crashed all the time for me and ate memory like a fat kid eats cake. There's more but I'm too lazy to type it all.

However, if you fully update it it's alright

In my work at a computer repair and sales shop I have had my hands on a bunch of different machines running Vista and running Windows 7.

The differences are pretty big in my estimation. One, and this is undeniable as far as I am concerned, mind you I've run both on the same rig, my sig rig, but Vista is just slower than 7. No ifs, ands, or buts about it.

Also, the user interface is much cleaner and more elegant. Much more pleasant to use. Those two things are all I need to know to stay with Windows 7. Some people make it sound like those things are not a big deal but I would say user interface and performance are two of the most important metrics by which to judge an OS.

Oh, I also have tried Vista at launch as well as right before Windows 7 came out and Vista SP2 was out and while they sure improved it over time it still fails compared to Windows 7. It wasn't just marketing that made people adopt Windows 7 twice as fast as they adopted Vista.

EDIT: Microsoft should do Windows Vista owners a solid and make the Vista UI just like the Windows 7 UI. Its not like it will impact sales of Windows 7 to do so and it would be nice for the people who got stuck with that OS.

False.

Vista was trash when released. Now after service packs, is essentially Win 7.
