Noob, needs some help

Thread Starter

I built my system in aug of 2010, and everything is still the same except I just replaced a ati4850 with a 5870 a few months ago. I was thinking of OC'ing my cpu and watched a great youtube video (

.

I would say after looking around here, that it now looks like I bought a limited cpu and a warm outdated MB. The cost of wisdom, though I have been happy with my build till i did my homework 9 months late...

So what do you think? Will my mb withstand the limited oc'ing of the cpu? Should I save up for a replacement? Which item or both?

Thanks in advance!

It might do alright, but the 4-pin CPU power worries me slightly. Don't think you can go too crazy on it, but you can definitely OC a bit.

You should be able go get some decent results overclocking that board and cpu.

So a bit? I have seen that it is best to use your bio's to OC, though thru the software that came with the MB (AI Suite i think) it will oc to 3.165GHz. You think that will be about all the extra juice I can get?

I would think you should be able to get 3.4 vithout too much trouble, but start mild and slowly work your way up to what your comfortable with and mind your temps

dont use software to overclock, do it through bios

that board has 8+1 power phase, it will be just fine for overclocking that cpu

your cpu cooler may be a bit weak for it tho
i have it on my htpc, under load (x2 260@stock 3.3) it turns up to 100% fairly quick

drop the ram multi to 1333, then slowly (5-10mhz at a time) bring up the fsb to around 250+/-
at 250 your ram will be 1666 and cpu will be 3750

watch the temps
try to keep it under 60c under load, aim for 55c
