new gaming build

Thread Starter
This will be my first PC build. I have never built a computer before, but it seems to be pretty easy. I have been doing a lot of research on PC parts, I would really like to get all your opinions on the items I chose. I will use this PC for mostly gaming and watching movies. A big priority of mine is being able to multi task, specifically: being able to play a game and download music/ movies/ burn movies to dvd at the same time w/o compromising the quality/performance of the game I am playing.

Approximate Purchase Date: After AMD bulldozer

Budget Range: about $1500

System Usage from Most to Least Important: gaming, movies, and browsing

Country of Origin: US

Overclocking: I have never done this before, but after I build my PC I plan to do an extensive amount of research on this, so yes

SLI or Crossfire: yes, in the near future

Monitor Resolution: This is something i would like to get help on. I would like to spend at most $300. Please give recommendations on monitors. preferably on a 23'-27' monitor.

Additional Comments: I would like to get some recommendations on a computer case. I want to spend at most $150 on this. I would like a Sleek case, one with a window to check out my hardware, nothing that looks too aggressive. I REALLY like the way the corsair obsidian 800d looks, the only problem is that its too big an cost too much.

My build (so far)

cpu: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115072 $225

MoBo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813157240 $220

gpu: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814127562 $290

cpu cooler: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835181013 $105

psu: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817139010 $140

memory: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231428 $95

HDD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136533 $90

burner: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827106335 $26

Total: 1200

For a case the coolermaster storm sniper seems to suit your needs, $150 off newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-194-_-Product

You could check out the HAF series as well, the 922/932 should suit you.

I would have to recomend the Dell U2311h as a monitor. IPS is awesome.

It's slightly over your budget, but if you like the corsair 800D, why not look at the 650D?
You need to make some adjustments..

MOBO: ASUS P8P67 PRO or MSI P67A-GD65

CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D14 or a Thermalright Silver Arrow (Which I cannot find on Newegg at the moment)

PSU: Corsair AX850 (Which is very high quality) or the Corsair HX850 (Which is a step down but still very reliable) Both are modular. You can even bump up to a 950 or 1000 to be safe if you want. Corsair is definitely the right brand though.

HDD: I would look at Samsungs Spinpoint series. They have a high reputation around here.

RAM: I probably wouldn't change it.

Video Card: No comment.. way way too many good choices out there. You will save some money on the MOBO and CPU cooler if you take my advice (Which you should on those two anyway) and you can throw that money to a better GPU.

Monitor: I have a Samsumg LED 23" Which I am in love with. 1080p and perfect bright colorful picture. Just shy of 300 bucks at Best Buy and probably cheaper online. I would buy the monitor at a B&M store though.. Because you can see in person what you are buying.

Case: Look into Silverstones Raven series. The design is genius. They stay very very cold. The RV-02 is a beast. I plan to upgrade my 1 to the 2 after I SLI the 580.

You really should consider changing the CPU cooler. My D14 and others like it post cooler temps than H70 and H50 setups every day. I've seen screen shots of others and others Silver Arrows doing the same. Plus no possibility of a water leak. I've got a screen shot of my 2500k hitting a max temp of 65 after 9 hours of Prime95. This is before I dropped my volt down. Now my idle temps are about 5 degrees lower (I also cleaned my completely blocked fan filters). Usually during heavy gaming after a few hours I average 55 degrees. A good case has a lot to do with it though.. Mine has 3 massive fans on the bottom throwing lots and lots of air into the GPU and CPU.

The two MOBOs I posted along with a certain Gigabyte one in the same price range are highly regarded. The ASUS is used a lot.. just look around at sig rigs.

That's all I got. Good luck with your decisions.

That RAM is incompatible with a Sandy Bridge build. RAM has to be 1.5V.

I would look at a Z68 motherboard such as;

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-250-_-Product

OR

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-597-_-Product

OR

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-730-_-Product

Samsung F3 1TB HDD - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-185-_-Product

I would also recommend getting a reference 6950 and unlocking it to a 6970. The MSI TwinFrozr is non-reference and as such, can not be unlocked to a 6970. Although I should also point out that there is no 100% guarentee that a reference 6950 will unlock. But I would go with a reference 6950 unless unlocking it isn't worth the risk to you, then get the MSI TwinFrozr.

For CPU cooler, get a Noctua NH-D14 air cooler. It performs better than the H70 (Sorry fanbois, but its fact) and its cheaper.

NH-D14 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...018&Tpk=NH-D14

Power supply is an excellent choice, I own one and its a fantastic unit. Good to see you did your research and chose a good quality unit! I know someone else recommended an 850W unit but that is total overkill. Your system won't even draw close to the 750W HX-750, so no need for an 850W unit

Good choice on the memory, G.Skill is awesome memory.

So they are a few other options you could consider. But otherwise its a very good system!

Looks pretty good!
I would suggest taking that $300 and buying a gtx 560 or even a gtx 570 ( you could find one on sale) I also believe that model will not unlock to a 6970 ( correct me if im wrong) You would be better off getting a 6970 (imo)
If your planning to overclock, you have the correct cpu!

Here are a few case ideas in your price range!

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811129097

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811119160

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811119194

PS. your mobo is fine, your hdd is fine, your cpu cooler is fine!!!

It doesn't have to be 1.5. You can run the memory controller at 1.65v, it's obviously better to look for a 1.5v kit, but it's not impossible to do.

You may have issues booting if it doesn't default to 1.65v though.
