Combining DVD files

Thread Starter
If this belongs in a different area, my appologies and mods please move as necessary. I figure that it is pretty much an htpc type inquiry.

Has anyone figured out a way to easily combine a 2 disk DVD set into one file on their storage machine?
Specifically I have the Lord of the Rings special extended DVD collection and have loaded it onto my server using DVD Decrypter. Since each movie is comprised of 2 disks I was hoping to combine them into one file so that it would just play the whole movie rather than have to go through a selection process at the end of the first disk playing.
I have My Movies software that lets you assign a dvd as part of a series of disks but it still will ask which disk you want to play when you open the file set in media player, so I was hopeful that this can be overcome by someone smarter than me who has figured out a way.

Another little thing would be is there a way to take out the previews and warning screens from ripped DVD's so that you can get the movie to play as soon as you start it in the media player? Seems like someone would have this one figured out now since the "nag screens" and previews can be so annoying sometimes (okay most of the time)?

Appreciate any help or direction to info on ow to do this that anyone can provide for a noob at ripping and storage of movies?

Bill

Get some decent video editing software. Cut out the bull you don't want and combine the two videos.

Well the obvious answers I expected.
Sorry guess I was not specific enough, so lets try this again.

The DVD's contain .IFO, .VOB, and .BUP file extension files on them. IS there any way to tell which of these are the preview/warning screen files and bypass them or remove them so the movie will play without them?
I "assume" that each of those files is a marker and/or some form of file to make things work all together. I see that it "looks" (again assuming on my part) that the .IFO files are the actual video portions.
So has anyone figured out how to eliminate/modify/change the other files to make the movie video play without the previews and warnings?

I would also assume that on a 2-disk movie, one of these files would be the one to state to "insert disk 2" at the end of the first movie?

Also is it better to save the movie onto the server in the regular "file" format or is there a better format to use?

Hopefully this is clearer.

The "Vob" File is the actual video file.
The "IFO" is a set of instructions for your dvd player to tell it in which order to play each file.

I would store them as an .iso file and you can put them together.
Just rip all the .vob files and make sure they're sequentially numbered. Download imgBurn and "create an image from files/folders" Select the vob files for both movies and it'll create an .iso

To watch the .iso you download a virtual drive program like daemon tools and just load the iso when you want to watch it.

I use dvd shrink.
It can rip just the movies, then you can combine the disks into 1 file (I use .iso).

Ahhh finally some real answers.
Okay you two, Thank You very much.
I do have the DVD Shrink program (just never have looked at it yet - DOH) so I guess I will have to take a look at it and see what it can do.

Well I played with DVD Shrink last night and I see that it will make the files into one big movie .iso file (cool).
Now I have to ask - Is there a way to play the .iso files with Win 7 Media Center or do I have to install a seperate program to play them? Or do I have to convert the .iso file to something that media center will "see"?

I am also in the process of ripping over 200 VHS tapes into the server using an ion vhs player. It stores the movies as a .mpg file that the media player doesn't seem to see? How do I get Media Center to see these files and list them as movies?

I sure do appreciate the help folks.

While it's certainly possible to have files displayed in the default Windows Media Center interface, I highly suggest you look into Media Browser.

Also, instead of storing your DVD rips as ISO, store them as VIDEO_TS folders. If you have 7-Zip installed, that's as easy as selecting your ISO files, right-click and selecting Extract to "*\\"
