Wait, aren't you trolling? You did start the topic. This remind me of the topics posted when Fermi was released last year from ATI fans.

What were you hoping to accomplish by posting this topic? I'm a bit confused here?

this was posted to show people the game obviously, lots of people looking forward to it. my opinion doesn't really give this topic a "motive", i just saw this video and posted it here.

With Guild Wars we ask players to make a choice only one time, and that choice is whether to buy the game, or not to buy the game. While we don't enjoy a recurring revenue stream each month, we do benefit from the fact that most Guild Wars players come back to the game when we release new content, so we are less concerned about players putting the game down for a few months.

The subscription model is still perfectly viable, but the pain threshold is very low now. It's no secret that gamers don't want to pay a subscription fee. If you can convince them that your game offers enough value to justify it, more power to you! But be prepared to defend your decision, often and loudly, and back it up over the lifetime of your game.
If the game is good enough, the subscription model is going to make you significantly more money. If the game isn't at that level, then BTP will make you the most money. EA/Bioware aren't looking to just recoup development costs and cover wages. They're hoping to fund at least one additional MMO (Mass Effect) with the profits of TOR, something they're almost assuredly going to succeed in (funding it, I'm not sure what they're looking at for gameplay for ME online).

So why, if they're acknowledging that subscriptions can make more money, would they decide so early on that you're not going to do that? They went for great innovative success rather than great financial success. They didn't have the budget to compete with WOW or the then-rumored SWTOR, so they didn't try. Based on reading most of the literature on both games and speaking to devs of both at PAX, GW2 is going for innovating the genre, TOR is just trying to put the best damn MMO currently possible on the market. At the moment, both are looking like they'll succeed.

you're just trying to twist what was said. nothing in there suggests that subscriptions are necessary, but quite the opposite. your earlier statement about no content after release was a flat out lie, so i won't even respond to anything you say dealing with content.

lol @ not having the budget to compete with WoW. competing with WoW was not their concern most likely, and if it was they did a much better job than everyone else. GW was a pretty big success, and they still have content updates and in game events as of 2011. they had three expansions within 3 years of release too.

the team was planning a huge expansion called Utopia that had many, many big changes to the core gameplay and they eventually decided they might as well be making a new game.

you make way too many statements as if they are fact, without actually knowing much about ArenaNet or their games.

Find where the word "necessary" appears in my post (I'll even credit you for synonyms). Who's trying to twist what someone else said?

Also, how can a statement that starts "I believe...." be a "flat out lie"?

how can you believe it if it's confirmed not true? there's already post release content underway.

Those of you who can enjoy this video and eagerly await SWTOR without having to belittle another game and make a bunch of blatantly false statements in order to make SWTOR look better by comparison, more power to you. enjoy the game and have fun.

you're the people that i posted this for .

WoW has cost Blizzard/Activision $200+ million from development til now according to . ToR's budget without marketing and no current release date is already well past $80 million according to the investor's call a week or so ago. You really think Guild Wars was THAT successful with only 7 million boxes sold (that's to the whole franchise, including expansions)?

Did I say there wouldn't be post release content? Nope. I said that I believe (I myself being a aspiring game developer that has done intern work at a studio before) they wouldn't be able to sustain it at a pace required to keep subscriptions. Yeah, they'll probably make it a year or so on stuff that was started before the game launched, but there will be a point where their ability to keep up that pace is severely limited, at which point, if they relied on subscriptions, they would lose a large portion of them.

Guild Wars will be a great game. I don't dispute that. I just don't think it will realistically compete with TOR for a long period of time.

guild wars did well, i didn't say it added up to WoW numbers, but they did better than most other MMO devs out there. their goal was not to compete with WoW in any way therefore i do not care if they made as much bank. i didn't suggest they did either. what are you even trying to prove anymore? your original point about them not being able to make content fast enough was stated as fact, and it is a lie. they made postgame content pretty fast the first time around. their staff is twice as large and their budget is much bigger too.

you got called on some BS, move on.
